Carlos Eduardo Brandão Mello

Carlos Eduardo Brandão Mello was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro on August 31, 1956.

He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) School of Medicine and Surgery (EMC) in 1979, and later on, completed a Master’s degree in Gastroenterology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1988 and obtained a Ph.D. from the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) in 1997. In 2004, he was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Internal Medicine after successfully completing his studies at UniRio. 

Dr. Brandão Mello was granted a fellowship to study at the Italian Universitá Degli Studi di Milano’s Department of Liver Diseases in 1986. To further add to his impressive educational record, from 2006 to 2007 the physician completed a postgraduate program and a continuing education course at Harvard University, followed by two different stints (2008 and 2011) at the University of Paris, as well as at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, USA, in 2012, and finally, at England’s Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2013. 

Today, Dr. Brandão Mello is a Full Professor as well as the physician in charge of the Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology subjects taught at the Rio de Janeiro School of Medicine and Surgery, in addition to serving as Head of the Gastroenterology and Liver Disease Outpatient Department at the Gaffrée and Guinle University Hospital (HUGG). 

Dr. Brandão Mello also holds the title of Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine, where he works at the Hepatology Division of the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital. 

The esteemed doctor is additionally distinguished as a Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Hepatology and comprises the Editorial Staff and works as an Editor at the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the BMJ Case Reports publication, and the Pan-Amazonian Journal of Health. 

Dr. Brandão Mello is a medical practitioner in the field of Internal Medicine, with a focus on gastroenterology and hepatology, and particularly, on the subjects of viral hepatitis, co-infections caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), portal hypertension, and treatment of hepatitis C. 

He was actively engaged in helping to treat victims of the radioactive accident that took place in Goiânia, Brazil, after which time he published multiple publications fully dedicated to this specific field of medical expertise.
