Inaldo de Lyra Neves-Manta

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1963 to 1965 and 1967 to 1969

Inaldo de Lyra Neves-Mantas was born in Jaboatão in the State of Pernambuco on September 3, 1903, to João da Silva Neves-Manta and Joana de Lyra Neves-Manta.

He completed a Bachelor in Medicine program at the University of Brazil (now, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ), graduating in 1929. 

Dr. Neves-Mantas was voted to occupy a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on July 26, 1945, after submitting a paper called “Drug Addictions. Ethical, Sociological Foundations and Clinical Psychology.” In 1984, he was granted the status of Emeritus Professor and held several positions at the board of the institution, where he also served as President from 1963 to 1965, and from 1967 to 1969. 

Some of the honors and positions the distinguished physician and professor earned and held include Associate Professor and Full Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Brazil National College of Medicine, Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Vassouras and at Souza Marques University’s School of Medicine, as well as an Honoris Causa honorary degree awarded from both the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Pernambuco and the Olinda Higher Education Foundation. 

Furthermore, Dr. Neves-Manta inaugurated, put in place, and ran the Department of Medicine and Mental Hygiene of IPASE (Civil Servants’ Welfare and Assistance Institute), in addition to receiving the title of Honorary Member, Founder and Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Aerospace Medicine. 

To further add to his brilliant resume, Dr. Neves-Manta was an Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Vassouras and the Teresópolis Faculty of Medicine, as well as a Member of the Brazilian Society of Neurology, Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine, the Brazilian Criminology Society, the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry, the Rio de Janeiro State Psychiatric Association – of which he served as President -, and the Brazilian Academy of Medical Writers, which he also chaired.

Moreover, Dr. Neves-Manta was a Member of the Brazilian Institute of Medical History, the Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine, a Corresponding Member of Peru’s National Academy of Medicine, Alagoas’s Academy of Letters, the Dominican Academy of Letters, and the São Paulo Academy of Medicine. 

He was also granted the titles of Honorary Member of the Brazilian Academy of Pharmacy, the Brazilian Institute of Medical History, the Societé Psychologique of Paris, and Emeritus Member of the Pernambuco Academy of Medicine. He was further bestowed the National Order of Medical Merit in the grade of Grand Officer, the Order of San Carlos of Colombia, and the Order of D. Pedro I. Finally, Dr. Neves-Manta received the Pernambuco-based, Instituto Centro-Americano de Cultura-issued (Central American Institute of Culture) Humberto Castelo Branco Order of Merit, in addition to the Vital Brasil, Pereira Passos, Clementino Fraga, and Oswaldo Cruz Medals.

The ANM Museum is named after him, and Dr. Neves-Manta’s bust is displayed on the 7th floor hall of the institution.

Dr. Inaldo de Lyra Neves-Manta passed away on January 11, 2000.
