Edgard Magalhães Gomes

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1975 to 1977

Dr. Edgard Magalhães Gomes was born in Petrópolis in the State of Rio de Janeiro on November 2, 1901, to Horácio Magalhães Gomes and Lucila Magalhães Gomes. 

He obtained his diploma in medicine in 1926, after studying at the University of Brazil (currently, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) National College of Medicine. 

Dr. Magalhães Gomes was elected as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on June 13, 1946, upon successfully submitting an essay called “Anatomo-clinical traits of Rheumatic Cardiomyopathy.” He went on to become an Emeritus Professor in 1946, served as Vice-President between the years of 1972 and 1974, and as President from 1975 to 1977. 

According to Academy Member and President of the ANM, Francisco Sampaio, Dr. Magalhães Gomes was responsible for commissioning famous painter Castellane to paint the panels that adorn the ANM’s Great Hall, despite backlash received from a group of Board members in the years of 1976 to 1977. 

The physician amassed a number of positions at several institutions. These include Full Professor of Physiology at the College of Medical Sciences; Associate Professor on the subjects of Clinical Medicine and Medical Propaedeutics at the National College of Medicine of the extinct University of Brazil; and professor positions at the Federal Fluminense University Department of Clinical Medicine and the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) School of Medical Sciences (where he would rise to the ranks of Full Professor of Clinical Medicine).  

He additionally served as an Associate Professor at the School of Medicine and Surgery of the Hannemanian Institute (Allopathy), was a Full Professor at the Souza Marques School of Medicine and held the same position at the College of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where he was later honored as an Emeritus Professor.

Professor Magalhães Gomes further took on the role of Head of the Ninth and Twenty-Second Wards of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, where he was also a member of said philanthropic institution. Moreover, he joined the Brazilian Society of Radiology and the Brazilian Society of Gastroenterology and served as a Full Member at the Rio de Janeiro Academy of Letters, the Brazilian Society of Angiology, and the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology. In addition, the physician was an Honorary Member of the Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine, the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology, and the French, Colombian, Mexican, Uruguayan and American Colleges of Cardiology.

He was elected President of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology and held a position as Member of the Historical Institute of Petrópolis. Furthermore, Dr. Magalhães Gomes was bestowed the Alfred Jurzykowsky Award from the National Academy of Medicine, the State of Minas Gerais-issued Medal of Inconfidência, and was honored with the Grand Cross of the Order of Medical Merit.

He passed away on October 19, 1986.
