Deolindo Augusto de Nunes Couto

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1955 to 1959, 1969 to 1971, 1973 to 1975, 1977 to 1979 and 1981 to 1983

Deolindo Augusto de Nunes Couto was born in 1902 in the State of Piauí. He became a Bachelor of Medicine in 1926, after graduating at the National College of Medicine of the now extinct University of Brazil (currently, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) in 1926. 

The physician was elected a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on August 20, 1942, and an Emeritus Member in 1976. He composed several boards and served as President from 1955 to 1959, 1969 to 1971, 1973 to 1975, 1977 to 1979, and from 1981 to 1983.

In addition, Dr. Nunes Couto was a Full Member of Neurology, and afterwards, an Emeritus Member at the University of Brazil’s National College of Medicine. He also served as a Full Member of Clinical Neurology at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) and at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), as well as Vice-Rector and Rector of UFRJ. Moreover, Dr. Nunes Couto led the task of founding UFRJ’s Institute of Neurology, which now honors him with his name, and joined several medical societies as well as the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

Dr. Nunes Couto received several honors and medals in recognition of his brilliant contributions to medicine. These include the Oswaldo Cruz Medal of Merit; the Medal of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon; the Spanish Civil Merit award; the National Order of Merit; the Aeronautical Order of Merit; the D. João VI Order of Merit; the Naval Order of Merit, the Education Order of Merit; the Coronel Assunção Order of Merit granted by the Military Police of the State of Guanabara – now, the State of Rio de Janeiro –, and the French National Order of the Legion of Honor medal.  

Dr. Deolindo Augusto de Nunes Couto passed away on May 29, 1992.
