Flávio Pereira Kapczinski 

Flávio Pereira Kapczinski was born on August 21, 1963, in the city of Porto Alegre in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. 

He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in 1986, and three years later, pursued a Psychiatry Residency Program at the same institution. Continuing his medical studies there, Kapczinski earned a Master’s degree after completing the Graduate Program in Medicine: Medical Sciences in 1991, followed by a PhD in Psychiatry from the University of London, England, in 1995. The following year, Kapczinski would become a Postdoctoral Fellow at Canada’s McGill University. He further specialized in the field of Cognitive Behavior Therapy at the Beck Institute (BI) in the United States in 1999. Ten years later, the psychiatrist joined the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) as a faculty member.

Academically, Dr. Kapczinski held the title of Associate Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul’s (UFRGS) Department of Psychiatry and Legal Medicine as well as his current position of Full Professor there. Furthermore, he serves as a Visiting Professor at the Canadian McMaster University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, where from 2016 to 2020, he carried out several duties as Director of the Centre for Clinical Neurosciences (CCN), Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, and Faculty of Health Sciences.

Moreover, the lauded psychiatrist and scholar fulfills several roles at UFRGS, including that of Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Psychiatry since 2011. In the same city of Porto Alegre, more specifically in the Hospital das Clínicas (HCPA), Kapczinski has served as Director of Development and Projects since 2009, in addition to Coordinator of the Research Group and Graduate Program since 2012.

Dr. Kapczinski’s work is deemed groundbreaking when it comes to studying changes that occur within both the brain and body due to mental disorders. In 2009, he founded the National Science and Technology Institute for Translational Medicine (INCT-TM), and later on in 2013, was appointed as a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). In September 2016, in turn, he took on the role of Full Professor at McMaster University in Canada, and the following year, was designated as the institution’s Head of the Neuroscience Graduate Program. Most recently, Kapczinski founded and now heads the aforementioned university’s Centre for Clinical Neurosciences. According to Clarivate Analytics, he ranks as one of the most influential individuals worldwide in the field of psychology and psychiatry since 2016. And in October 2021, the Expertscape platform acknowledged Dr. Kapczinski as the 4th World Leading Expert in Bipolar Disorder.

Working also as an editor for multiple Brazilian as well as foreign medical journals, he has contributed to the Journal of Psychiatry of Rio Grande do Sul; Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry; Brazilian Magazine of Psychiatry; Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica; Journal of Psychiatric Research; and the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience.

Dr. Kapczinski has been honored with several accolades throughout his acclaimed career, such as the Mogens Schou Award granted by the International Society for Bipolar Disorder in 2013. In addition, students of his have been awarded the Samuel Gershon Junior Investigator Award eight times.

Dr. Kapczinski is an active member of numerous medical societies and associations in the likes of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), Academy of Medicine of Rio Grande do Sul and the Brazilian Association of Bipolar Disorder (ABTB). Outside of Brazil, he is part of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, where he served as Vice-President in the field of research from 2009 to 2010. Also there, he occupied the positions of Member of the “Committee on Nomenclature” (freely translated); Member of the “Committee on Treatment Guidelines” (freely translated); Member of the “Biomarkers Committee” (freely translated); and Member of the “Staging Committee” (freely translated).

On May 18, 2023, Dr. Flávio Pereira Kapczinski was elected a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) after submitting a dissertation titled “Brain Gene Expression in Bipolar Disorder: Comparative Analysis with Schizophrenia and Controls.” His induction ceremony took place on August 18, 2023, and he was greeted into the Academy by fellow ANM member Antonio Nardi.
