Antonio Egídio Nardi

Antonio Egídio Nardi was born on December 15, 1959, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. 

He graduated in Medicine in 1984 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and later on, obtained his Ph.D. in Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Mental Hygiene from the same college. 

From 1997 to 1998, Dr. Nardi secured his postdoctoral diploma from the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics’ Laboratory of Respiration Physiology. Later on, in 2004, he was granted the title of Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio).

The psychiatrist was further appointed as a Full Professor of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine of UFRJ, where he is in charge of Rio de Janeiro’s main office of the National Science and Technology Institute for Translational Medicine (INCT-TM).   

Among his many credentials and titles, Dr. Nardi is the founder and coordinator of the Laboratory of Respiration Physiology of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s Institute of Psychiatry; International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association; Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry (Scielo); and Associate Editor of a wide range of both Brazilian and foreign scientific publications. 

Additionally, he has published over 500 scientific papers, more than 79 book chapters, nine books, and compiled 12 books.  

One of Dr. Nardi’s research lines concerns the study of panic disorder, with the end goal of recognizing physiological changes resulting from exposure to virtual reality settings. He also dedicates his time to researching panic disorder-related neuroimaging linked to the subject of, and triggering from, visual stimuli. Finally, the lauded psychiatrist conducts studies on topics such as panic disorder associated with agoraphobia, which is defined as the fear of being in crowded places or the fear of fear itself which oftentimes precedes panic attacks, as well as cognitive therapy for treating individuals suffering from bipolar disorder.
