Manassés Claudino Fonteles

Manassés Claudino Fonteles was born on September 7, 1941, in the city of Aquiraz in the State of Ceará. He enrolled at the Federal University of Ceará Medical School and graduated in 1967. Later on, he went to pursue a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Medical College of Georgia, USA, in 1974, as well as a postdoctoral degree from New York’s University of Rochester in the USA from 1979 to 1980.

Starting from his second year in medical school, Fonteles was taken under the wing of his mentor Geraldo de Sousa Tomé, a renowned pathologist working at Professor Bogliolo’s Anatomical Pathology School. During this time, he studied experimental cancer and instead of going on vacations, decided instead to attend classes at the University of Pernambuco (UPE), interning under the supervision of Oswaldo Lima e Evans e Silva. 

He further served as a monitor in Biochemistry classes for two years, after which time he interned at the late Professor Lauro Sollero’s laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine in Rio de Janeiro. Shortly afterwards, Fonteles started working with Guilherme Kurtz, who encouraged him to take his first steps towards establishing a research project. It was also with Kurtz that Fonteles published his first international paper.  

In 1978, Dr. Fonteles headed to Rio de Janeiro, where he completed a specialization program in Pharmacology, shortly thereafter returning to his home state of Ceará. There, he proceeded to train a research group that would go on to compose the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. 

The pharmacologist’s resume includes several titles, such as Full Professor and Emeritus Professor at the Ceará State University (UECE); Clinical Professor at the University of Virginia, USA; Full Professor and Emeritus Professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC); and Professor/Researcher at the Mackenzie Presbyterian University, of which he served as Rector from 2003 until 2010. 

Throughout his remarkable professional career, Dr. Fonteles was also honored with numerous accolades and distinctions, including the National Order of Scientific Merit in 2002, Inconfidência Badge of Honor, and the Tamandaré Medal and Diploma of Merit in 2007. 

The recognized physician has presented over 200 publications in both Brazilian and international congresses and conferences and has additionally authored more than 100 scientific papers. In 1990, he discovered the Simile Natriuretic Factor (FNS), which garnered him international acclaim due to the substance’s similarity with guanidine.

Furthermore, Dr. Fonteles served as Head of Department for 15 years, Associate Dean of the Center for four years, and Coordinator of the postgraduate program for three years. 

Regarding society memberships, he is a member of numerous institutions, such as the Brazilian Academy of Sciences; American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET); Sigma XI Society; New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS); State of Ceará Academy of Medicine; and the State of Ceará Academy of Sciences. 

In addition, the pharmacologist composes Advisory Boards to the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq); Finep, which is a state-run Brazilian organization that fosters science and technology throughout the country; and the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (Capes). 

Dr. Manassés Claudino Fonteles holds experience in the area of Pharmacology, with a focus on Cardio-renal Pharmacology and working mostly on the following fields: Kidney Preservation for Transplantation, Natriuretic Hormones and Guanidine-type Antihypertensives, Vascular Protection Mechanisms in Diabetes, and Nephrotoxicity from Animal Toxins.
