Pietro Novellino

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 2003 to 2005, 2009 to 2011 and 2013 to 2015

Pietro Novellino was born on January 12, 1933, in Casaletto Spartano in the Province of Salerno, Italy, to Giuseppe Novellino and Angelina Giúdice Novellino. The family migrated to Brazil when he was five years old and settled in the city of Juiz de Fora in the State of Minas Gerais. When he was still a student, he was bestowed the Manoel Feliciano Award (Certificate and Gold Medal) from the National College of Medicine. 

He graduated from the same college, at that time named the University of Brazil (currently, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) in 1957, and it was also there that he completed his Doctoral studies in General Clinical Surgery in 1972, after submitting a final paper on “”Thyroidectomy in Nodular Goiters.”

Some of the achievements Dr. Novellino accomplished throughout his long-lasting career include Associate Professor/Doctor of Surgery at UFRJ; Head of the Department of Endocrine Surgery at the State Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes; Full Professor of Surgery and Emeritus Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) School of Medicine and Surgery; Full Professor (Clinical Surgery) at Iguaçu University and the Souza Marques Technical-Educational Foundation, as well as Head of the Surgery Department at Hospital Gaffrée-Guinle.  

Dr. Novellino served as Rector of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro’s and as Delegate of the Ministry of Education in Rio de Janeiro.

Additionally, he held a Full Member chair at the Academy of Sciences of Sicily (Italy), the Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine, and the Brazilian Academy of Education. He was a Full and Founding Member of the Brazilian Medical Society and Ambulatory Surgery, a Member of the Latin American Thyroid Society, and of the Brazilian Hospitals Federation. 

Dr. Novellino was an Honorary Member of the State of Amazonas Academy of Medicine and the Royal National Academy of Spain, as well as an Emeritus Member of the Fluminense (State of Rio de Janeiro) Academy of Medicine and an Active Member of the SENAC Board of Trustees and Colégio Pedro II school’s Higher Council. 

Furthermore, he served as a Corresponding Member of the Society of the Juiz de Fora-based Society of Medicine and Surgery and composed UNIRIO’s Board of Directors, as well as the Brazilian Societies of Angiology, Endocrinology, and Mastology.

The physician also led and founded the Experimental Surgery Department of the Hospital da Lagoa (INAMPS).

When it comes to prizes and awards, Dr. Novellino was honored with the Grand Officer Medals of Naval and Aeronautical Merit; the “Professor Clementino Fraga Filho” Medal of Merit; the “Pedro Ernesto” Medal and the “Tiradentes” Medal awarded by the State of Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly. In addition, he received the Medical Order of Merit in the rank of Grand Officer granted by the Ministry of Health and was acknowledged with honorary medals bestowed by both the French and Portuguese Academies of Medicine. 

Additional tributes paid to Dr. Novellino include the title of “Cidadão Benemérito” (Honorary Citizen) of the State of Rio de Janeiro; the “Estrela de Real Grandeza” (Star of Royal Grandeur) honor given by the city of Juiz de Fora, and Benefactor of the General Polyclinic of Rio de Janeiro. He was also bestowed the title of “Conselheiro Emérito” (Emeritus Councilor) by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

The Brazilian College of Surgeons also paid tribute to the renowned surgeon with a medal and diploma, and he was named an “Honorary Citizen” of the city of Juiz de Fora. Furthermore, he was awarded the “Fernando Vaz” Award, which included a Golden Silver Medal and Diploma; the Golden Silver Medal and Diploma comprising the “Brant Paes Leme” Award, the “Rocha Vaz,” Award, and finally, the “Alberto Coutinho” Award.

In his candidacy to occupy a chair as a Full Member at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Novellino submitted an essay addressing the subject of “Feocromocitome and its Surgical Treatment.” At the organization, he held positions at the board of directors, served several tenures as its Vice-President, the first ranging from 2003 to 2005, followed by 2009 to 2011, with his final term in office being from 2013 to 2015.
During his first term as Chair of the institution, Dr. Pietro Novellino inaugurated the Bust of his President, Academy Member Fioravanti Di Piero, in the hall of the seventh floor of the ANM, in celebration of the latter Academy Member’s centennial anniversary.
