Maurício Rocha e Silva was born on December 30, 1936, in the city of São Paulo, to Maurício Oscar da Rocha e Silva and Maria Ignez da Rocha e Silva.
He studied Medicine at the University of São Paulo (USP), graduating in 1961, and two years later, obtained a Ph.D. in Medicine from the same institution. Also in USP, more specifically in 1968, Rocha e Silva was awarded the title of Associate Professor, afterwards rising to the rank of Full Professor in 1982. He now bears the title of Emeritus Professor at that prestigious center of education.
Dr. Rocha e Silva was a Member of the Senior Scientific Staff of the Medical Research Council at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, England, from 1970 to 1973). In addition, he led the Heart Institute (InCor)
of the University of São Paulo (USP) School of Medicine’s Experimentation Department in 1987 and was granted the distinction of Honorary Professor by the People’s Republic of China School of Medicine.
Among Dr. Rocha e Silva’s many prestigious credentials, he is a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC); São Paulo State Academy of Sciences (1988); Brazilian Society of Physiology; Brazilian Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (SBFTE); Brazilian Shock Society, of which he served as President; United Kingdom’s Physiological Society; and both the United States’ American Physiological Society and Shock Society.
The physician and scholar belonged to the Editorial Staff of publications such as Circulatory Shock, Brazilian Journal of Medical & Biological Research, and Shock. He further served as an Editor of the MedicalExpress journal and as an expert on the subject of scientific writing taught in higher education institutions.
In recognition for his outstanding contributions to the field of medicine, Dr. Rocha e Silva was bestowed the Lafi Award of Medical Sciences in 1980, and in 2000, received the National Order of Scientific Merit in the rank of Grand Cross. He has authored 115 scientific papers in both Brazilian and international medical journals, as well as edited two books on the subject of Cardiovascular Pathology.
The lauded physician is an expert in the field of Pathology of the circulatory system, with a special focus on blood pressure control, neurosecretion, and circulatory shock. His most popular article has amassed over 400 citations, while his six most cited articles account for more than 100 mentions each.
Upon being officially sworn in as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Maurício Rocha e Silva presented a paper by the name of “Hypertonic Solutions.”
