Roberto Soares de Moura

The son of Heitor Soares de Moura and Airam Vieira Soares de Moura, Roberto Soares de Moura was born on July 10, 1936, in the city of Raul Soares in the State of Minas Gerais.

He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1961, and later on, in 1967, the same institution awarded him the title of Associate Professor. The physician also pursued a postdoctoral degree from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in Great Britain from 1961 to 1962. 

Between 1964 and 1965, Dr. Soares de Moura served as a Visiting Researcher at the Cleveland Clinic Educational Foundation in the United States, where he worked alongside Dr. Irvine Page and published an article in the prestigious Science medical journal. The research he conducted there helped to prove, for the first time, how continuous injections with doses of Angiotensin led to arterial hypertension.

Several years later, in 1986, the physician and researcher completed further postdoctoral programs both at the Mayo Clinic in the United States and the University of London in England, where he held a continuous position in the early 1970s.

Nowadays, Dr. Soares de Moura works as a Visiting Professor at the Department of Pharmacology of the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro’s (UERJ) Roberto Alcântara Gomes Biology Institute. He holds experience in the field of Pharmacology, focusing on cardiovascular pharmacology and medicinal plants. 

The lauded pharmacologist’s primary areas of research include the subjects of arterial hypertension; vasospasm; endothelium; nitric oxide; EDHF; antinociception; polyphenol-rich plants; and conducting research targeted towards securing new patents.

He has been responsible for filing seven patents with Brazil’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), including two registered under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Furthermore, Dr. Soares de Moura’s research studies have been replicated in over 50 Brazilian and international journals and he has also played a key role when it comes to establishing and consolidating the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Graduate Program in Pharmacology.

Throughout his acclaimed career, Dr. Soares de Moura has been involved in numerous Brazilian Ministry of Health-led committees, such as its Biopharmacy Commission and CRAME, among others), which were tasked with standardizing Brazil’s medication policy prior to the establishment of the country’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). 

Moreover, he served as a Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ) Member for several years, and in 1981, was honored with a National Council for Scientific and Technological Development-granted (CNPq) medal in recognition of his significant research activities. 

Soares de Moura is also responsible for editing various publications, namely Fundamental & Clinical Pharmacology; Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (JPP); Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research; British Journal of Pharmacology; Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology; and the Pharmacology Biochemistry & Behavior publication. 

In his submission for a Full Member status at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Roberto Soares de Moura presented a dissertation titled “Serotonergic Receptors and Schistosoma Mansoni Motility.”
