Mônica Roberto Gadelha

The daughter of attorney Meton Porto Gadelha and psychologist Nilza Roberto Gadelha, Mônica Roberto Gadelha was born on July 23 in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro. 

She studied Medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine and graduated in 1989, during which time she was bestowed the “Golden Stethoscope” award for finishing first in her class. Gadelha would then go on to intern both at the Professor Fernando Steele da Cruz-helmed laboratory of studies and the Professor Mário Vaissman’s Endocrinology Outpatient Department at the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital (HUCFF).

Shortly afterwards, the young physician successfully secured a medical residency at HUCFF’s Endocrinology and Nutrition Division, holding the position from 1990 to 1993, as well as the title of Specialist in Endocrinology and Metabolism from the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM) in 1992. 

She then earned her Master’s degree in Endocrinology in 1995, followed by a Ph.D. in Endocrinology in 1999, both of them from the UFRJ Faculty of Medicine. During her Ph.D. program, she was granted a scholarship by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) to attend a sandwich program at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) in the United States, under the supervision of Professor Lawrence Frohman.

Dr. Gadelha serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine and as a Visiting Professor at the Queen Mary University of London, England. She is additionally a board member of the Departments of Neuroendocrinology at both the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the European Neuroendocrine Association (ENEA).

Moreover, the esteemed doctor holds the title of Coordinator of the Neuroendocrinology Research Center at the Endocrinology Department of the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital (HUCFF) at UFRJ. Also, Dr. Gadelha was appointed as Head of the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital (HUCFF) Ambulatório de Adenomas Hipofisários (Pituitary Adenoma Outpatient Clinic). Last but not least, she leads the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the Paulo Niemeyer State Brain Institute (IEC).

While being officially sworn into the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Mônica Roberto Gadelha shared a dissertation entitled “Translational Evolution for the Clinical Treatment of Acromegaly: The Role of MicroRNA miR-34a.”

As an author, Dr. Gadelha has penned over one hundred articles for scientific journals and constitutes editorial boards – in addition to serving as a reviewer – for several Brazilian as well as foreign medical publications. Her main research lines include the molecular bases of pituitary adenomas and traits pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of pituitary adenomas, such as acromegaly, prolactinoma, Cushing’s disease, and clinically non-functioning pituitary adenomas.
