Natalino Salgado Filho

Natalino Salgado Filho was born on July 25, 1946, in the city of Cururupu in the State of Maranhão, to Natalino Salgado and Ivete Caldeira Salgado.

After completing grade school in his hometown, he moved to São Luís, where he finished his elementary and high school studies at the Colégio de São Luiz school. In 1973, he graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) and then headed to Rio de Janeiro, pursuing a residency in Internal Medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Salgado Filho proceeded to obtain another specialization diploma, this time in Nephrology, from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Pedro Ernesto University Hospital.

In 1975, the newly graduated doctor joined the National Institute for Medical and Social Security (INAMPS), now linked to Brazil’s Ministry of Health. Three years later, he devised and established the State of Maranhão’s Nephrology Department, while concurrently undertaking efforts to bring the first artificial kidney to the state’s capital, São Luís, as well as performing the first hemodialysis procedure in the state. In 1980, in turn, the pioneering physician also set up Maranhão’s first Medical Residency program.

Dr. Salgado Filho obtained his Master’s degree in Medicine (Nephrology) from the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) in 1987, and at the same institution, completed his Ph.D. in 1994. During the span of his career, he specialized in the areas of Internal Medicine; Nephrology; Higher Education Teaching; Immunology; and Hospital Management Training.

Today, Dr. Salgado Filho holds the position of Full Professor at the medical department of the Federal University of Maranhão’s (UFMA) Center for Biological Health Sciences, in addition to teaching and lecturing at several postgraduate programs offered by the aforementioned institution, such as the Health Sciences and the Adult and Child Health Postgraduate Programs. 

Some of the physician and academician’s numerous titles and accomplishments include Founder and first President of the Sociedade Maranhense de Nefrologia (State of Maranhão Nephrology Society) and Member of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology’s (SBN) Department of Clinical Nephrology. He also served as Vice-President at the latter institution for the 2007-2008 term.

In 1989, Dr. Salgado Filho chaired the Co-Management Council of the Hospital do Instituto de Previdência do Estado do Maranhão (Maranhão State Social Security Institute Hospital – IPEM). He further served as President of a committee tasked with establishing the State University of Maranhão (UFMA) University Hospital from 1990 to 1991, after which time he was appointed to its Board of Directors, holding the position from 1990 to 1994, as well as heading the institution’s Nephrology Department between 1991 and 2010.

From 1997 to 2007, he was designated as General Director of the UFMA University Hospital, thereafter, rising to the rank of Dean of UFMA, which he occupied for two terms, ranging from 2007 to 2015.

The lauded physician and scholar additionally serves as a Member to multiple medical associations, among them the Academia Maranhense de Medicina (State of Maranhão Academy of Medicine); Institute of History and Geography of Maranhão (IHGMA); Brazilian Society of Hypertension (BSH); and the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN). 

Dr. Salgado Filho is also part of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN); American Society of Nephrology (ASN); Brazilian Society of History of Medicine; Academia Maranhense de Ciências e Letras (Maranhense Academy of Sciences and Letters); and the Brazilian Academy of Medical Writers (Sobrame).

He further belongs to the managing committee of the Ligas Estudantis de apoio à Nefrologia (Student Associations for Nephrology) and serves as Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Nephrology’s Clinical Epidemiology and Nephrology section. In addition, Dr. Salgado Filho heads the Federal University of Maranhão’s Nephrology Department (HUUFMA), and finally, to top off his extensive list of achievements, he is entrusted with the task of running the NGO kidney related PREVRENAL Project. Within the realm of Nephrology, he focuses his work and research in the topics of Arterial Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease.

Throughout his celebrated career, he has published over four hundred papers in specialized medical journals as well as drafting the annals of both Brazilian and foreign conferences. Today, Dr. Natalino Salgado Filho drafts weekly articles for Brazilian publications and is a holder of numerous distinctions and honorary titles
