Omar da Rosa Santos was born on May 20, 1940, in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro, to Homero da Fonseca Santos and Zulmar da Rosa Santos.
He studied at the Medical and Surgery School of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) and graduated in 1964, whereas in 1977, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Law. Also in UniRio, Santos was granted the title of Associate Professor of Internal Medicine/Nephrology in 1971 as well as a Professor of Internal Medicine in 1983.
During his medical education, the young physician interned in several areas of expertise, such as Internal Medicine; Obstetrics, Emergency Care and Surgery; Psychiatry; Anesthesiology; Clinical Laboratory; Pre- and Post-operative Care; and Gynecology, among other fields, between 1959 and 1964.
However, Dr. Santos decided to specialize in the subjects of Rheumatology in 1966; Higher Education Teaching in 1972; Hospital Administration in 1978; and Nephrology in 1971.
Throughout his successful career, Dr. Santos worked as a medical practitioner in various institutions and hospitals, including the Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital in Rio de Janeiro and the Bankers’ Retirement and Pensions Institute (I.A.P.B.).
In addition, he served in both Brazil’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health; Francisco de Castro isolation ward under the Medical Services Superintendence (Suseme); Antonio Pedro University Hospital; Clara Basbaum Maternity Hospital; and as Medical Director of the State of Rio de Janeiro Supreme Court’s Department of Health from 1972 to 1991.
Moreover, Dr. Santos devised and established the Nephrology Department at the Hospital Federal do Andaraí, from 1972 to 1992, and was appointed and served as Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the Gaffré e Guinle University Hospital from 1966 to 2010, both of them in Rio de Janeiro. He further held positions at the UNI-RIM Nephrology Clinic from 1979 to 2010 and at the Ministry of Health-led National Institute for Medical and Social Security (INAMPS) between 1981 and 1990.
Throughout his career at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro’s (UniRio) Medical and Surgery School, Dr. Santos slowly climbed the ladder of all the institution’s academic ranks, starting in 1965. There, he held the positions of Assistant Professor; Lecturer in 1974; Associate Professor in 1976; and Full Professor of Internal Medicine from 1983 to 2010. For his invaluable efforts undertaken there, he was honored with the titles of Emeritus Professor in 2012 and Head of the Gaffrée and Guinle University Hospital (HUGG) Medical Department.
The esteemed physician has held the position of Academic Coordinator as well as Professor at the Hospital Central do Exército (Brazilian Army Central Hospital) in Rio de Janeiro since 2010.
Dr. Santos has also been granted membership to multiple medical societies and organizations both in Brazil and abroad, namely the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology, where he was awarded an Emeritus title in 1980; Brazilian Society of Nephrology; State of Rio de Janeiro Society of Nephrology, of which he served as President; International Society of Nephrology (ISN); Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society from 1965 until today; and SINE-MED in Rio de Janeiro.
He was additionally a Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC); Grupo de Reflexão Católica, a Catholic faculty senate from 2015 to 2011; Academia Fluminense de Medicina (Academy of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro); Academy of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro (ACAMERJ) in 1992; Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine in 1992; Brazilian Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (ABMR); and the Rio de Janeiro Academy of Letters in 2006.
To top off the extensive list of medical associations he joined throughout his career, Dr. Santos became a Member of the Portuguese-Brazilian literary Academia Luso Brasileira de Letras in 2010; Academia Fides ET Ratio in 2011; Eça de Queiroz Society in 2013; Amazonas State Academy of Medicine; Ceará State Academy of Medicine; Academy of Medicine of Piauí; Portugal’s Mariana do Açores Academy; and finally, the Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain.
As a writer and scholar, Dr. Santos has published 150 technical and cultural review and editorial papers; sixteen theses and dissertations; 650 articles on a host of different subjects; two textbooks; eight academic/cultural books, of which three were published in printing presses; fifty-three textbook chapters; and close to twenty-five literary works.
Furthermore, he was approved with honors in twenty-three public examinations.
Upon running for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Omar da Rosa Santos submitted an essay by the name of “Contributions to Understanding Nephropathies Associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infections.”
