Ronaldo Damião

The son of Álvaro Américo Damião and Marfisa Canassa Damião, Ronaldo Damião was born on December 10, 1950, in the city of Araguari in the State of Minas Gerais.

He is a class of 1975 medical graduate from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), with a specialization in Urology and a Ph.D. in Medicine, also in Urology, from the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) in 1991.

Dr. Damião holds the title of Full Professor at the UERJ Faculty of Medical Sciences’ Department of Surgical Specialties, where he teaches the subjects of Kidney Transplantation and Urologic Oncology. In addition, he serves as Coordinator of the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-Rio) Medical School’s Lato Sensu (non-degree graduate course) Postgraduate Program in Urology.

A seasoned physician, Dr. Damião focuses his medical practice in the field of surgery, running the Urology Service of the Rio de Janeiro-based Pedro Ernesto University Hospital (HUPE), as well as being part of the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CREMERJ) Technical Chambers. The renowned surgeon further heads the 14th Ward of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Hospital in Rio de Janeiro and is a former President of the Brazilian Society of Oncology (SBO).

Other prestigious positions held by Dr. Damião include Principal Investigator and General Coordinator of the 2003-established Center of Research in Urology Sergio Aguinaga (CEPUSA), a fully equipped facility for conducting quality research activities. Over the years, CEPUSA has been heavily engaged in numerous Brazilian and international consultations and research spanning across several medical areas, namely erectile dysfunction; benign prostatic hyperplasia; prostate cancer; prostate biopsy; premature ejaculation; urinary incontinence; overactive bladder; and urinary tract infection, among others.

Moreover, Dr. Damião serves as Coordinator of the Centro de Assistência à Saúde do Homem (Men’s Health Care Center), under the umbrella of the Rio de Janeiro-based Piquet Carneiro Clinic.

Among the many accolades and honors that the surgeon has amassed throughout his medical career, one of particular significance is the Pedro Ernesto Medal granted by the Rio de Janeiro City Council. He also received distinctions from the Brazilian Society of Urology; Portuguese Association of Urology (Uroweb); and the Brazilian Navy-issued Almirante Tamandaré Medal, in addition to the 2013 Gold Gyroscope award. 

Dr. Damião is specialized in Urological Surgery, with a focus on the areas of prostate cancer; urethra; stereology; penis; and hypospadias.

Upon running for full membership to the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Ronaldo Damião submitted an essay named “Partial Nephrectomy – Surgical Technical Indications and Results.”
