Augusto Paulino Soares de Souza Netto

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 2001 to 2003

Born to Augusto Paulino Soares de Souza Filho and Lilia Faria Soares de Souza, surgery was already in the bloodline of Augustino Paulino Soares de Souza Netto, who was born on September 13, 1932, in Rio de Janeiro. 

His grandfather, Augusto Paulino Soares de Souza, left a legacy of disciples and students, among them his two sons, Augusto Paulino Soares de Souza 

Filho and Fernando Paulino Soares de Souza, both of them also holders of Chair Number 39. The legacy the family left for medicine still lives on through his sons, one of which is an orthopedic surgeon also named Augusto Paulino. 

He studied at the University of Brazil’s (now called the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) National College of Medicine and graduated in 1956.

Some of Dr. Souza Netto’s credentials included the positions of Associate Professor in the subject of Gastroenterological Surgery at the College of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; Visiting Professor of Surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the USA; Full Professor of General Surgery at the Graduate School of Medical Studies of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro; Visiting Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois’s College of Medicine; Visiting Professor in the Department of Surgery of Mount Sinai School of Medicine; Full Professor of General Surgery at the Gama Filho University and the Medical School of the Souza Marques Technical-Educational Foundation in Rio de Janeiro.

Furthermore, Dr. Souza Netto served as Head of the Department of General Surgery at Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital and the Head of the Department of Surgery of the Thirteenth Ward of Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital, both located in Rio de Janeiro. The physician dedicated himself relentlessly to this last position and, in turn, it helped to define his brilliant career.

During his fruitful career, Dr. Souza Netto held – and in many instances founded – numerous positions at several institutions in Brazil as well as abroad. These include member of the Gastroenterology Society of Rio de Janeiro; Founding Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Medicine and Emergency Surgery; Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology; Founding Member of the Collegium Internationale Chirurgiae Digestivae; Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons, and Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Souza Netto additionally fulfilled the roles of Member of the Societé Internationale de Chirurgie; Founding Member of the Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery in São Paulo; Fellow Member of the InterAmerican Medical and Health Association; Founding Member of the Brazilian Pancreatic Society at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia General Hospital in Rio de Janeiro; Honorary Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Romania; Member of the Academy of Medicine of Piauí; Member of the Brazilian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Member of the Paris-based, French Academy of Medicine.

Other professional honors were also bestowed upon him, such as the Grand Officer Medical Order of Merit and the Honor and Merit Award in recognition for his contributions to Brazilian medicine. Moreover, Dr. Souza Netto received a Member Emeritus Diploma and Medal awarded by the Brazilian College of Surgeons, a UNESCO-awarded Paulo Carneiro medal in celebration of his 100th anniversary, and finally, a silver medal given by the Academy of Medicine of both France and Portugal. 

During his candidacy to secure a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) in 1989, he presented an essay called “Surgical Treatment of Hypoglycemia.” There, he was elected Vice-President in 1999 and rose to the ranks of President in 2001, serving in that position until 2003.

Dr. Souza Netto passed away on May 13, 2010, in Rio de Janeiro.
