José Galvão-Alves

José Galvão-Alves was born on November 19, 1952, in the city of Guaratinguetá in the State of São Paulo.

He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1976, and shortly afterwards, completed a Residency in the field of Internal Medicine at both the São Francisco de Assis Hospital and the UFRJ University Hospital. In 1980, he went on to specialize in Gastroenterology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), whereas two years later, he successfully secured a Master’s degree, also in Gastroenterology and at the same institution. 

That same year, he completed an “Update in Internal Medicine” further education program at Harvard Medical School, followed by a Ph.D. in Gastroenterology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). 

Dr. Galvão-Alves has served as a Professor in several universities since 1980, at which time he joined the Medical School of Gama Filho University and later rose to the rank of Full Professor, a position he held from 1997 to 2006. In 1983, he was offered and accepted the position of Professor of Internal Medicine (Full Professor from 1997 to 2006) at the Souza Marques Medical School. Effective 1994, he also started teaching the subject of Gastroenterology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), where he also served as a Full Professor during the 1994-2006 tenure. 

From 1978 to 1982, the recognized physician and professor also worked at the emergency departments of the Carlos Chagas State Hospital and the Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital, both of them in Rio de Janeiro, between 1979 and 2006. He additionally led the latter institution from 1991 to 1994, establishing its Digestive Endoscopy Department (1985-2004) and Gastroenterology-focused outpatient department (2003-2004).

As a scholar, Dr. Galvão-Alves has published over 230 papers in medical journals, around twenty books and contributed more than 120 book chapters.

Moreover, he holds membership to numerous societies, namely the State of Rio de Janeiro Society of Gastroenterology and Nutrition, which he chaired from 1999 to 2000; Brazilian Society of Internal Medicine, of which he served as Regional President until 2010; and the Brazilian Society of Hepatology. Additionally, Dr. Galvão-Alves is a Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Internal Medicine and the Sociedade Brasileira do Pâncreas (Brazilian Pancreatic Society), which he led from 1999 to 2004. 

The lauded gastroenterologist is also a Member of the Brazilian Association of Psychosomatic Medicine, which he directed during the 1984-1986 term; Brazilian College of Surgeons in the Gastroenterology Division; and the Latin-American Academy of Nutrology (ALAN), among others. 

In his academic career, the gastroenterologist held the position of Scientific Editor of the Vitrô Gastroenterology medical journal from 1995 to 1996, as well as a Scientific Advisor to the Vitrô Cancerologia (1996), Medicus (1996-1997) and Medicine (1997) journals. 

From 1985 to 1990, in turn, Dr. Galvão-Alves served as the Scientific Coordinator of the Ars Curandi – Gastroenterology journal, Member of the editorial staff of the Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology (GED journal) between 2002 and 2004, and Member of the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology scientific committee in 2006. In addition, he founded the Revista Brasileira do Pâncreas (Brazilian Journal of the Pancreas) in 1997 as well as the Brazilian Journal of Gastroenterology in 2001. 

Dr. Galvão-Alves has been a Member of the JBM (Brazilian Medical Journal) scientific board since 1986, as well as a Scientific Editor of both the Revista Brasileira do Pâncreas (Brazilian Journal of the Pancreas) since 1997, and the Jornal Brasileiro de Gastroenterologia (Brazilian Journal of Gastroenterology) since 2001.
