The son of Carlos Barbosa Giesta Filho and Alba de Barros e Vasconcellos Giesta, Carlos Américo de Barros e Vasconcellos Giesta was born on April 13, 1937, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
In 1961, Vasconcellos Giesta became a Bachelor of Medicine at the now defunct University of Brazil’s National College of Medicine (today, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ). Four years later, he completed a Specialization Program in Orthopedics at Northwestern University in Chicago, USA, after successfully defending his “High Displacement Primary Osteotomy of the Hip for Displaced Intracapsular Subcapsular Vertical Fractures of the Neck of the Femur” final paper. He completed his education by earning a Doctor of Medicine title from UFRJ in 1971, following approval of his thesis on “Chondromyxoid Fibromas: Characterization of Biological Behavior.”
One year later, the lauded physician rose to the rank of Associate Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) through a public college admissions evaluation. In addition, he was approved in another public diploma evaluation examination to secure the position of Full Professor of Orthopedics at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) Medical and Surgery School’s Department of General and Specialized Surgery in 1977, after passing yet another civil service admissions examination. At the time, he presented a final paper by the name of “Pycnodysostosis: Determining Histopathological Patterns.”
Dr. Vasconcellos Giesta also engaged in several Continuing Education programs, namely, in Toronto, Canada, in 1965; Wigan, England, in 1972; Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1972; Miami, USA, in 1974; Basel, Switzerland, in 1981; and Goteborg, Sweden, in 1981.
Additionally, he headed the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital’s Orthopedics and Traumatology Division from 1972 to 1976, in addition to setting up, and serving, as the First Head at the Gaffrèe and Guinle University Hospital’s Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology. Giesta also held the position of Coordinator at UFRJ’s Graduate Program in Orthopedics from 1979 to 1987, and from 1989 to 1997, he headed the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) Department of General and Specialized Surgery.
The doctor and scholar continued to fulfill other duties at UniRio, more specifically, as a Member of its University Council during the 1972 to 1976 term and as an Emeritus Professor, a position he was granted on November 25, 2007.
In addition, Dr. Vasconcellos Giesta holds membership to numerous scientific societies, such as the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT); Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; Association for the Study of Internal Fixation; the Societies of Orthopedics of Chile, Argentina, and Italy; Brazilian College of Anatomy; and the Brazilian College of Surgeons. Furthermore, he is a Founding Member of the Brazilian Academy of Orthopedics and Traumatology and holder of Chair Number 34, whose Patron is Dr. Nova Monteiro (1918-2005), also a Member at Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM).
Dr. Vasconcellos Giesta has also authored multiple dissertations and papers, such as “Chondromyxoid Fibromas: Characterization of Biological Behavior;” “Pycnodysostosis: Determining Histopathological Patterns;” “Patellectomy in Articular Fractures of the Patella,” and finally, “Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis.” Also, he has penned a total of 32 scientific articles on the subjects of Orthopedics and Traumatology in Brazilian as well as in foreign medical journals.
Additionally, as the Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian Orthopaedic Journal from 1997 to 2008, Dr. Vasconcellos Giesta was responsible for restructuring and indexing the publication to the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Moreover, he was actively involved in discussions that led to the journal’s inclusion in the PubMed database, of which he currently holds the position of Emeritus Editor.
Since 1988, Dr. Vasconcellos Giesta has held the titles of Full Member of the National Academy of Medicine (ANM), of which he served as Official Speaker during the 1999-2001 and 2022-2023 terms and served as President of the Surgery Division from 2001 to 2003.
To be elected as a Full Member of the ANM, Dr. Carlos Américo de Barros e Vasconcellos Giesta submitted a paper entitled “Contribution to the Study on Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis.”
