Adolpho Hoirisch

The son of Nisen Hoirisch and Perlea Hoirisch, Adolpho Hoirisch was born on May 22, 1930, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

He graduated in medicine in 1954 from the now discontinued University of Brazil (current Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ), with a focus on psychiatry. Dr. Hoirisch held numerous positions at UFRJ’s Institute of Psychiatry, including Class Instructor, Assistant and Adjunct Professor, and Associate Professor until receiving the title of Full Professor of Medical Psychology in 1975. In 2013, he was distinguished as an Emeritus Professor by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

At UFRJ’s Institute of Psychiatry, the lauded psychiatrist additionally served as Head of the outpatient service, ward, and psychiatric clinic. Afterwards, Dr. Hoirisch transferred the academic discipline of Medical Psychology to that same educational facility’s University Hospital. He additionally served as an Advisor to the National Division of Mental Health of Brazil’s Ministry of Health, during which time he carried out evaluations in forensic psychiatric hospitals.

From 1955 to 1958, Dr. Hoirisch worked as a volunteer teacher and assistant to Professor Maurício de Medeiros at Professor A.L. Nobre de Melo’s ward. Moreover, he was a faculty member at the Alfredo Pinto Nursing School between 1956 and 1967, where he taught the subjects of Psychology, Mental Hygiene, and Psychiatry.

The acclaimed doctor also served as a liaison psychiatrist at the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) Central Hospital, until he was transferred to the former Instituto de Seleção, Controle e Pesquisas (Institute of Selection, Control and Research – today, the Center of Aerospace Medicine).

Dr. Hoirisch holds membership to a wide host of both Brazilian and international scientific societies and organizations, such as the Psychiatric Association of Rio de Janeiro; Brazilian Psychoanalysis Association; World Psychiatric Association, of which he served as chairman; Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of Rio de Janeiro; and the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), among others. In addition, he is acknowledged as a Full Member of the Rio de Janeiro-based Academy of Military Medicine.

To add to his long list of achievements, Dr. Adolpho Hoirisch penned several academic papers published in Brazilian as well as foreign medical journals. Moreover, he wrote book chapters and attended numerous Brazilian and international conferences and congresses. He also comprised the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CREMERJ), which is entrusted with assessing physicians’ mental health, a task that is deemed particularly challenging by Dr. Hoirisch. Other medical career-related issues that the psychiatrist states as significantly difficult include enhancing the standards of Brazil’s public health system and being able to successfully recognize cases in which patients fake mental health issues for their own specific reasons.

While running for a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Adolpho Hoirisch presented a paper addressing “Psychiatric Complications Resulting From Iatrogenic Effects.”
