Alberto Schanaider

Alberto Schanaider was born on April 3, 1957, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to Samuel and Tauba Schanaider. He graduated in Medicine in 1981 from the Faculty of Medicine (FM) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Schanaider completed his Master’s degree in 1987 and earned his PhD three years later. He has served as a Professor at the Department of Surgery of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s Faculty of Medicine (FM/UFRJ) since 1989 and was granted tenure as a Full Professor in 2010 after passing a specialized Surgical Technique and Experimental Surgery diploma-based admissions examination. He held the position of Head of the FM/UFRJ Department of Surgery from 2018 to 2020. In 1991, Dr. Schanaider was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio).

At the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (FM/UFRJ), Dr. Schanaider led efforts to devise and establish several programs, namely its MD-PhD Program in 2000; the Department of Surgery’s Simulation Laboratory, which provides hands-on training for subjects taught in the program syllabus, in 2010; and the Graduate Program in Surgical Sciences in 2008, of which he served as Program Coordinator. Furthermore, the lauded physician and professor fulfilled the role of UFRJ’s General Supervisor for Undergraduate Teaching. In his academic activities, Dr. Schanaider supervised fifty student Thesis/Dissertations as well as post-docs and participated in over one hundred stricto sensu (research-oriented postgraduate program) examination boards. Moreover, he mentored 125 Faculty of Medicine (FM) undergraduate and graduate students and undergraduate research scholars, in addition to teaching assistants. 

As an author, Dr. Schanaider has penned 117 full surgery-related papers, twenty book chapters and edited two books, in addition to serving as a reviewer for six foreign medical journals. He has attended more than six hundred scientific events both in Brazil and abroad and composed over 350 commissions, seventeen of which were diploma-based admissions examinations to assess candidates applying for the role of Full Professor of Surgery in several Brazilian universities, such as UFRJ, UERJ, UNIRIO, UFF, USP, UNIFESP, UFRGS, UFMG and UFJF. Moreover, Alberto Schanaider has been awarded 48 Grants/Scholarships in surgery-related fields as well as numerous Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC)-issued awards, namely the Mariano de Andrade, Alfredo Monteiro, Ruy Ferreira Santos, and Brant Paes Lema distinctions. Schanaider attended the XII Brazilian Congress of Experimental Surgery and the World Congress of the American Gastroenterological Association. 

Throughout his career, Dr. Schanaider has amassed a number of titles, including Emeritus Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC) and Emeritus Advisor to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Minerva Council. Furthermore, he was part of the Organizing Committee of the World Congress on Medical Education and chaired the XI National Congress of Experimental Surgery in collaboration with the XXIV Research Forum of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC). From 2002 to 2003, he served as President of the Network of Portuguese Language Medical Schools (CODEM-LP), encompassing universities from Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Angola, and Macau. 

Dr. Schanaider was further appointed as an ad-hoc advisor to the Ibero-American Program of Science and Technology for Development (CYTED) and fulfilled the same role at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) Scientific and Technological Cooperation Program with Spain. He provided guidance to the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO). Schanaider joined the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Public Ethics Institutional Commission and served as representative of the institution’s Full Professors at its University Council. He was also appointed by the Ministry of Education (MEC)/Anisio Teixeira National Institute for Educational Research and Studies) (INEP) to conduct evaluations of Brazilian Medical Schools. Finally, Dr. Schanaider has served as a III Medicine Division Member of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) Advisory Board since 1994.

In 2020, his peers voted and appointed him as Director of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine (FM). In his successful submission to claim a seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Alberto Schanaider presented an essay titled “”Acute Occlusive Arterial Mesenteric Ischemia: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Perspectives in Surgical Models.” In his induction ceremony, he was greeted by fellow ANM member Samir Rasslan.
