Álvaro Cumplido de Sant’Anna

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1951 to 1953 and 1953 to 1955

Álvaro Cumplido de Sant’Anna was born on May 26, 1896, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Son of José Joaquim Rodrigues de Sant’Anna and D. Hercília Cumplido de Sant’Anna, he studied medicine at the Rio de Janeiro College of Medicine (now, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ), graduating in 1918. 

Shortly thereafter, he became an Associate Professor at the same school, followed by a position of Full Professor of Urology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (later renamed the State University of Rio de Janeiro – UERJ), of which he took on the position of Dean. 

Dr. Sant’Anna was elected a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on June 26, 1930, after submitting a paper titled “Treatment of Neuroblastomas of the Urinary Bladder by Transurethral Resection” and became an Emeritus Member in 1980. 

He held several positions in the institution’s board of directors, as well as serving as its Vice-President from 1949 to 1951, and as President during two tenures: 1951 to 1953, and 1953 to 1955. He envisioned and undertook efforts to build the current headquarters of the ANM, and after a change in the by-laws of the institution, was reelected for a second consecutive term in office to conclude the headquarters’ construction works. 

Furthermore, Dr. Sant’Anna was honored as a Benefactor Member of the Brazilian Society of Proctology, as well as a member of several organizations in the likes of the Societé Internationale d’Urologie; the Brazilian Society of Urology, of which he was President; the Latin American Association of Medical Academies – ALANAM, and the American Confederation of Urology, of which he also served as President for several terms and where he would later be bestowed the honor of Permanent President. 

He was an Honorary Member of the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico, the Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine, the Brazilian Institute of Medical History, and the Peruvian Society of Urology.

In addition, the renowned surgeon and academician received the title of Honorary President of the Spanish Association of Urology; the Ordem do Pacificador (Peacemaker Medal) granted by the Brazilian Army; the Order of Isabella the Catholic from Spain; the Order of Medical Merit in the grade of Grand Cross; the French Legion of Honor Medal, and the Victory and Campaign Cross medals awarded by the Brazilian government.

Dr. Álvaro Cumplido de Sant’Anna passed away on August 28, 1980.
