Arno von Buettner Ristow

Arno von Buettner Ristow was born on April 13, 1949, in Brusque in the State of Santa Catarina, to Arno Ristow e Ally and Odette von Buettner Ristow. 

As a young man, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to study Medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and finished the public college admissions exam in eighth place in 1966. In 1972, he interned in the Department of General Surgery at the Hospital de Ipanema. 

A year later, he began working at the Department of Vascular Surgery of the IASERJ Central Hospital, an institution dedicated to providing medical assistance to state civil servants, a position he held for two years. In addition, the young physician won a scholarship offered by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdiest to work at the German Ulm University’s Department of Vascular and Thoracic Surgery; he would go on to specialize in Vascular Surgery at that same institution. 

Arno von Ristow is an angiologist and vascular and endovascular surgeon, as well as an AMB (Brazilian Medical Association) and CBR (Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging)-certified specialist in the fields of angiography and interventional radiology. 

In 1976, Dr. von Ristow took on a position at the Department of Vascular Surgery of Miguel Couto Hospital under the helm of physician Rodolpho Perissé. Three years later, he rose to the rank of Head of the Department, which he diligently fulfilled for a four-year term. 

In 1983, Dr. von Ristow published his first book, “Urgências Vasculares” (“Vascular Emergencies”), based on his personal experiences at Miguel Couto Hospital. That same year, he was appointed to take over the Beneficiência Portuguesa Hospital’s Angiology and Vascular Surgery Department. 

Following an arrangement celebrated in 1984, the surgeon was appointed to serve as an Associate Professor at the Rio de Janeiro-based Pontifical Catholic University’s (PUC-Rio) Graduate Program in Vascular Surgery. Nowadays, the program is run by the Clínica Sorocaba hospital, also in Rio de Janeiro. 

Furthermore, the esteemed physician fulfills the role of Scientific Director at the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV) and holds membership to 11 international medical societies and nine Brazilian medical societies. In addition to his comprehensive bibliography, he is a Member of several specialized medical journals. 

During his inauguration ceremony as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. von Ristow submitted an essay titled “The Evolution and State of the Art in the Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm – Experiences with 1,444 Case Studies.”
