Carlos Alberto Basílio de Oliveira

The son of Alberto Paiva de Oliveira and Iracema Basílio de Oliveira, Carlos Alberto Basílio de Oliveira was born on July 7, 1942, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. 

Basílio de Oliveira graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1969 and completed a Specialization Program in Teaching from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1972. To complete his education, he holds a Master’s degree in Anatomical Pathology from UFRJ (1984) and a Ph.D. in Pathology (Anatomical Pathology) from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) (1994). 

After graduating, Dr. Basílio de Oliveira served as Head of the Rio de Janeiro School of Medicine and Surgery from 1992 to 1996 and also led the institution’s Department of Pathology and Clinical Support from 1998 to 2012. In addition, he helmed the Gaffré and Guinle University Hospital’s Laboratory of Anatomical Pathology during the 1998-2012 term, fulfilled the role of Coordinator of the Brazilian Ministry of Health-run STD/AIDS National Coordination program, and held the position of Head of the São Vicente de Paula Hospital Laboratory. 

Furthermore, the lauded physician was designated as a Full Member at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and an Emeritus Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), in addition to securing the role of Researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), with a focus on Anatomical Pathology and Clinical Pathology. One of his main research lines concerns research studies on the subject of endemic goiter both in Brazil and abroad. 

Ever since 1972, Dr. Basílio de Oliveira has received numerous accolades and tributes from classes of the UNIRIO School of Medicine and Surgery doctorate program, as well as being voted Patron of several graduating classes. 

The lauded physician has also been bestowed a wide host of distinctions by the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), including the Alvarenga Award in 1973; Rocha Vaz Award in 1981 and 1985; Benjamin Baptista Award in 1986; Costa Junior Award in 1988; and the Austregésilo Award in 1989. In addition, Dr. Basílio de Oliveira received the Roche Award in 1976, the AMIL national health insurance Award of Medicine in 2003, and the UNIRIO-granted Silver Jubilee certificate in 2002.  

Dating back to 2000, Dr. Basílio de Oliveira has amassed memberships to a myriad of both Brazilian and international societies and associations. These include, among others, Honorary Member of the Brazilian Air Force; Member of the Brazilian Society of Pathology; Member of the Brazilian Society of Cytopathology (SBC); Member of the Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine; Full Member and Founder of the Rio de Janeiro Academy of Medicine (AMRJ); Full Member of the Brazilian Association of Physical Rehabilitation and Medicine; and Full Member and Founder of the State of Rio de Janeiro Brazilian Society of History of Medicine in 2008. 

Additional credentials of the esteemed physician include Founding Member of the State of Rio de Janeiro Cancerology Society, and Emeritus Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons and the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro) (CREMERJ). Finally, Dr. Basílio de Oliveira is a Member of both the Latin American Society of Cytopathology (SLAC) and the Latin American Pathology Foundation (SLAP). 

He has published over 180 scientific papers in Brazilian and international medical journals. 

During his candidacy to secure a Full Member seat at the ANM, Dr. Carlos Alberto Basílio de Oliveira submitted a dissertation by the name of “Opportunistic Pulmonary Infections in Autopsies in Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).”
