Carlos Alberto de Barros Franco

Carlos Alberto de Barros Franco was born on May 19, 1946, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to Carlos Pimentel de Barros Franco and Elsa Costa de Barros Franco.

He graduated from the former University of Brazil – now the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) – in 1971. During his undergraduate studies, Barros Franco passed a diploma-based public examination to serve as an Academic Assistant Scholar at the Department of Health, where he worked at the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital. In turn, after graduating, he carried out a medical residency in the field of Pulmonology at the First Medical Clinic of UFRJ, as well as at the Pulmonology Department of IASERJ State Hospital, a state-run facility that aids public officials.

Dr. Barros Franco completed a Master’s degree in Tuberculosis and Pulmonology at UFRJ in 1980, after which time he served as a visiting physician at several hospitals outside of Brazil, such as the New York Mount Sinai Hospital in the United States; Toronto General Hospital in Canada; Los Angeles County General Hospital in the USA; MD Anderson Cancer Center, also in the USA; and finally, the Laser Center of the Hospital Español in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Additionally, the physician worked as a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) from 1975 to 2006 and as a Full Professor of Pulmonology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro’s (PUC-Rio) Graduate Program in Medicine since 2002.

Dating back to 1972, Dr. Barros Franco initiated – and has never stopped – to energetically conduct research studies, which is why he was granted a scholarship by the National Research Council two years later.

In addition, he served as Head of the Medical Clinic Ward at UFRJ Faculty of Medicine’s First Medical Clinic and held the title of Physician at the Tuberculosis and Pneumology Division of the Rio de Janeiro-based IASERJ Hospital between 1972 and 1978, as well as fulfilling duties at the Pneumology Department of UFRJ’s University Hospital. 

In 1981, Dr. Barros Franco established a medical clinic that bears his name, of which he holds the title of Medical Director. Moreover, he leads São José Hospital’s Department of Pulmonology, Pulmonary Endoscopy and Sleep Disorders in Rio de Janeiro. 

In 1987, the renowned physician was appointed as a Member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), and in 1988, he also joined the American Thoracic Society (ATS). In 1993, in turn, he was designated as a Member of the International Academy of Chest Physicians and Surgeons of the American College of Chest Physicians. 

Other achievements of Dr. Barros Franco include full membership of the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology (SBPT), in addition to being a Founding Member of both the State of Rio de Janeiro Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology (SOPTERJ) (1991) and the South American Bronchology Society (1995). Finally, the physician served as President of the Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology of the State of Rio de Janeiro from 1991 to 1993.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine, Dr. Barros Franco was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital in 1998, and the following year, received the Tiradentes Medal granted by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in addition to the Análise Medicina (Medicine Analysis) distinction. In 2015, Rio de Janeiro’s House of Representatives lauded the doctor with the Title of Distinguished Citizen of the city of Rio de Janeiro and with the Pedro Ernesto Medal.

While running for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Carlos Alberto de Barros Franco presented a paper titled “Diagnosis of Mechanical Ventilator-Related Pneumonia Focused on Etiology.”
