Carlos Alberto Mandarim-de-Lacerda

Carlos Alberto Mandarim-de-Lacerda is a State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) medical graduate, having concluded his studies in 1978. In addition, he completed a Master’s program in Sciences (Histology and Embryology) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1981 and obtained his Ph.D. in Human Biology (Docteur d’Etat, Biologie Humaine) from Paris V – University René Descartes in France in 1985. The prestigious Stanford University in the U.S. rates him as a Physician (UERJ, 1978), Master of Sciences (Histology and Embryology, UFRJ, 1981), and Doctor of Human Biology (Docteur d’Etat, Biologie Humaine, Paris V – Université René Descartes, 1985).

Among his many positions and accolades, Dr. Mandarim-de-Lacerda holds the title of Full Professor at the Biomedical Center of UERJ’s Institute of Biology since 1988 and was appointed as an Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de la Frontera in Temuco, Chile, in 2013. Moreover, he was elected Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) in 2011, granted Chair Number 82 and has been serving as an Associate Foreign Member of the French National Academy of Medicine since 2018.

Dr. Mandarim-de-Lacerda led efforts to inaugurate the Department of Anatomy of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1986, after which time he served as Head of the Department for several, back-to-back terms. Furthermore, he runs the institution’s Graduate Program in Human and Experimental Biology (www.bhex.uerj.br), as well as the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development’s (CNPq) Nutrition, Obesity, Metabolism, Chronic Diseases and Pharmacological Actions research group. Stanford University ranks Dr. Mandarim-de-Lacerda as one of the top 100,000 scientists worldwide and as one of the 600 most influential Brazilian scientists (Plos Biology, October 2020 – research study entitled “Updated science wide author databases of Standard citation indicators” – https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3000918).

Currently, there is widespread interest in standardized citation metrics for both scientists and scientific subjects taught. The aforementioned publication provides updated assessments based on Scopus citations (starting from May 6, 2020), evaluating scientists who left long-lasting impacts due to their remarkable professional achievements. The data includes each scientist within the select group of the top 100,000 scientists across every area of expertise. The 2020 Plos Biology article acknowledges Professor Carlos Mandarim-de-Lacerda as one of them.

An update to the ranking (September 2020 data updated to “Standardized Author Databases across Science,” Mendeley Data, V4, doi:  https://doi.org/10.17632/btchxktzyw.4) also ranks Professor Mandarim-de-Lacerda. The Ad Scientific Index (Alper-Doger Scientific Index) is a ranking system based on scientific performance and on the added value provided by individual scientists’ scientific productivity. In addition to ranking through an “overall H-index” type of system, it employs “6-year H-index”, “overall i10-index,” “6-year i10-index,” “overall number of citations”, and “6-year citations” ratings. (https://www.adscientificindex.com/?s=0&q=Universidade+do+Estado+do+Rio+de+Janeiro&con=Latin%20America).

The AD Scientific Index brings rankings of scientists ranging from 19,500 institutions, 216 countries, 10 regions, and across the world. According to the aforementioned 2023 index, Professor Mandarim-de-Lacerda ranks 8th in UERJ, 660 in Brazil, 973 in Latin America, and 55,220 in the world. Moreover, he works at UERJ’s Laboratory of Morphometry, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases (www.Immc.uerj.br), focusing on the fields of Cytology, Cellular Biology, and Molecular Biology.

Some of the lauded physician’s latest projects aim to study alterations in key obesity-related organs and type 2 diabetes in experimental models using either pharmacological or nutritional treatments. To conclude his brilliant resume and achievements, the doctor and scholar holds extensive experience in microscopy, quantitative methods in morphology (stereology, morphometry, and allometry), and finally, in the area of metabolism.
