Carlos Roberto Telles Ribeiro

Carlos Alberto Telles Ribeiro was born on November 5, 1944, in the city of Recife in the State of Pernambuco, to Ayrton Telles Ribeiro and Lutecia Corrêa Ribeiro. 

He graduated in Medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1969 and afterwards completed his medical residency in the field of Neurosurgery at Brasília’s Hospital Distrital (District Hospital) in 1974. Additionally, Dr. Telles Ribeiro holds a Ph.D. (1980) and a postgraduate diploma from the Freie Universität of Berlin in Germany. Furthermore, the physician is a Specialist in Neurosurgery from the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery as well as a Specialist in the Treatment of Pain from the Brazil-International Association for the Study of Pain. 


Dr. Telles Ribeiro was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at UERJ and Head of the Neurology Division and the Pain Clinic of the institution’s Pedro Ernesto University Hospital, where he fulfilled the role of Head of Technical Services from 1984 to 1985. Other positions include Coordinator of Medical Assistance in 2002 and General Director during the 2002-2004 term. In addition, he was designated as Managing Director of the Neurology-focused Clínica Neurodor institution. 

Additionally, the neurosurgeon was appointed by the Adjunct Professor faculty as its official Representative for the Decision-Making Body of the Department of Surgical Specialties of the State University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UERJ) School of Medical Sciences (FCM) during the 1983-1984 term. To further add to his list of credentials, Dr. Telles Ribeiro served as Deputy Chief at the same department of the aforementioned institution during two terms: 1991 to 1993, and 1993 to 1996. He then filled in for Professor Pedro Monteiro Sampaio as Head of the Neurosurgery Teaching Unit (UDA) from 1990 to 1992, and finally, was elected President of both the Brazilian Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (1986-1990) and the Rio de Janeiro Neurological Society (1988-1990). 

Also, Dr. Telles Ribeiro is the Founder of the South Cone Society of Neurological Surgeons, Honorary Member of the Belo Horizonte-based Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital’s Center of Studies (1997), and Honorary President and Founding Member of the Liga de Neurotraumatologia del Mercosur (Mercosur League of Neurotraumatology), a title he was granted in 1998. Finally, he was distinguished as a Full Member of several societies and associations, among them, the Brazilian League against Epilepsy, the German Society of Neurosurgery, and the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). 

The acclaimed neurosurgeon has around 40 specialized medical publications under his name, in addition to five book chapters on neurosurgery, 300 papers and articles presented in congresses, and 400 lectures given both in Brazil and abroad. 

During his inauguration ceremony to be sworn in as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Telles Ribeiro deliberated on his essay titled “The Use of Stereotactic Biopsy in the Diagnosis of Intracranial Injuries.”
