Celso Ferreira Ramos Filho

Celso Ferreira Ramos Filho was born on October 1st, 1945, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

He pursued his medical studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), from where he graduated in 1971. Shortly afterwards, he completed a postgraduate program in Higher Education Methodology provided by the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro’s (PUC-Rio) Department of Education, followed by a Master’s degree in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at UFRJ, and finally, a Specialization Certificate in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Newcastle in Australia.  

Dr. Ramos Filho is an Adjunct Professor at UFRJ, a faculty member of the Souza Marques University, and served as a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Volta Redonda in Rio de Janeiro from 1975 to 1978. During that same time frame, he also lectured at the Federal State University of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) School of Medicine and Surgery. 

Moreover, he is the Vice-President of both the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (SBMT) and the Brazilian Medical Association, in addition to holding the title of President at several societies, namely, the Rio de Janeiro-based National Institute of Infectious diseases, the Brazilian Society of Infectious Disease (SBI), and the State of Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society.  

Outside of Brazil, Dr. Ramos Filho was appointed as the Latin American and Caribbean Representative to the International AIDS Society (IAS) Governing Council and Executive Committee. Furthermore, he serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC) and is the Correspondent Member of the Associação Médica de Cooperação Lusófona e Iberoamericana, a Lisbon-based cooperation association for the advancement of medicine between Portuguese and Ibero-American nations.  

Among Dr. Ramos Filho’s numerous distinctions and honors, some particularly worth mentioning include the 2002 Integración Latinoamericano (Latin-American Integration) award, World Medal of Freedom granted by the American Biological Institute in 2007, and the Mérito Cultural (Order of Cultural Meriti) certificate awarded by the Brazilian Academy of Medical Writers in 2011. Other accolades include the Certificate of Appreciation and Recognition for Cooperation and Leadership in Planning and Implementing the Brazil-CDC Collaborative Aids Study, a host of IAS-awarded recognitions and a Lifetime Membership granted by The International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC). 

In both 2014 and 2015, the renowned physician was honored by the Brazilian Ministry of Health’s STD, AIDS, and Viral Hepatitis Coordination Program on the World Aids Day. The following year, IAPAC listed Dr. Ramos Filho as one of the world’s 150 most influential personalities in the field of HIV/AIDS of the past 30 years. 

Furthermore, Dr. Ramos Filho comprises scientific committees of numerous Brazilian and foreign medical journals and serves as an Advisor to several international and domestic institutions such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); World Health Organization (WHO); Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS); Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC); Finep, which is a state-run Brazilian organization that fosters science and technology throughout the county; and the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa), among other organizations. 


In addition, he has helmed three HIV/AIDS-related, Brazilian Ministry of Health-led cooperation missions in Central American and African countries. Finally, Dr. Ramos Filho holds the position of Coordinator of the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CREMERJ) Technical Chamber of Hospital Acquired Infections and Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, as well as serving as a Member of the Ministry of Health’s Technical Commission for Antiretroviral Therapy for the Treatment of Adults.
