Celso Marques Portela

The son of Wenefredo Bacelar Portela and Dinah Marques Portela, Celso Marques Portela was born on May 11, 1937, in the city of Araguari in the State of Minas Gerais.

He graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1961, later earning his Ph.D. in Medicine in 1968 from the School of Medicine and Surgery of Rio de Janeiro, nowadays, the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio). The following year, Dr. Marques Portela would secure the position of Associate Professor in Clinical Surgery at the School of Medicine and Surgery of Rio de Janeiro, and furthermore, he holds a Specialization Certificate in General Surgery from the Brazilian College of Surgeons.

While pursuing his medical studies, Marques Portela first worked as an Anatomy Class Monitor and secured an internship at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital’s Department of Internal Medicine under the guidance of Professor Clementino Fraga, as well as at the Surgery Department of the Hospital de Ipanema medical establishment under the helm of Professor Lúcio Galvão. Moreover, the then young physician served as an Academic Assistant at the Federal District – now Rio de Janeiro – Health Department.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Marques Portela held the position of Physician in two state-run, Rio de Janeiro-based medical institutions, namely, the General Surgery Departments of the Hospital de Ipanema, where he worked in its General Surgery Division, and the Miguel Couto Hospital, where he remained up to his retirement. 

The surgeon specialist further holds certifications in Laparoscopic Surgery conferred by the Brazilian College of Surgeons, Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery, Brazilian Society of Coloproctology, and by the Brazilian Medical Association. He is also certified in Surgical Oncology by the Brazilian College of Surgeons.

Dr. Marques Portela was a visiting intern at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and the Baylor College of Medicine within the Texas Medical Center in Houston, both of them in the USA, as well as at the Venezuelan Military Hospital.   

Ever since its establishment and up to now, the recognized surgeon and scholar has been actively involved in the Rio de Janeiro Hospital de Ipanema’s (INPS) Medical Residency Program, where he teaches and is in charge of devising and coordinating programs. Moreover, in 1972 he was voted President of the Residents Committee at the aforementioned institution, and four years later, he secured the position of Medical Residency Coordinator. 

Furthermore, Dr. Marques Portela has attended multiple congresses and workshops both in Brazil and abroad and published numerous scientific papers as well as book chapters in his area of expertise.  

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an Emeritus Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons, in addition to being awarded membership to the Brazilian Society of Gastroenterology in 1969 and the title of Correspondent Member of the Venezuelan Society of Surgery in 1990.   

In 2019, by unanimous decision, Dr. Marques Portela was awarded the Brazilian College of Surgeons Award, the main distinction granted by said institution to the most prominent Brazilian surgeon of that time. 

During his candidacy to secure a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Celso Marques Portela submitted a dissertation by the name of “Esophageal Diverticulum.” In 2022, he was voted to serve as President of the ANM Surgery Division, a role he is set to fulfill until 2023.
