Cláudio Buarque Benchimol

Cláudio Buarque Benchimol was born on October 29, 1947, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to Aarão Burlamaqui Benchimol and Yole de Paula Buarque Benchimol. 

His education credentials include an undergraduate degree in Medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1971 and a Specialist Certification in Cardiology from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology in 1976. In addition, after graduating he completed a Master’s degree in 1974 and a Ph.D. in Cardiology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1981.  

Dr. Benchimol was appointed as Head of the Hemodynamics and Coronary Angiography Division of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1977 and remained in the position for 11 years, after which time he started teaching a class on Internal Medicine at the institution’s Department of Medicine.  

Since 1974, the physician has held the position of Adjunct Professor at UERJ, where he is a Professor at the chair of Cardiology/Epidemiology, in addition to teaching disciplines in the university’s graduate program. In 1990, in turn, he was admitted as a faculty member at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Dr. Benchimol works as a cardiologist at the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital, where he is also in charge of the Hemodynamics and Coronary Angiography and Interventional Cardiology Department. Moreover, he has his own private practice. 

In 1982, the lauded physician received the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM)-granted Carlos Chagas Award upon submitting a paper on “The Electrogram of the His-Bundle in Chronic Chagas Cardiopathy.” Four years later, the ANM awarded another honor to Dr. Benchimol, this time, the Pedro de Almeida Magalhães order of merit following the presentation of his dissertation titled “Normal Echocardiographic Patterns in Brazilian Children.”

Dr. Benchimol was invited to join the Editorial Board of the Mexican Revista Investigación Internacional (International Investigation Journal) in 1984, whereas in 1986 he started collaborating as an Editor at Folha Médica, a science-focused publishing company based in Rio de Janeiro.

Furthermore, Dr. Benchimol holds the distinctions of Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology and the Society of Cardiology of Rio de Janeiro, in addition to being a Fellow of the University of London in England. In 1999, he was honored with the title of Distinguished Member of the General Polyclinic of Rio de Janeiro. 

The celebrated cardiologist has attended a wide host of Brazilian and international Congresses and Scientific Meetings, presenting open topic discussions and lectures. Also, he has authored several articles in domestic and foreign journals and book chapters. Finally, alongside fellow Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) Member Aarão Burlamaqui and Professor Paul Schlesinger, he co-edited the Brazilian Encyclopedia of Cardiology, which is currently in its third edition, as well as subsequent complements to the publication.  

Upon successfully being granted a Full Member position at the ANM, Dr. Cláudio Buarque Benchimol presented a paper entitled “Clinical and Coronary Angiography Correlation in Acute Coronary Insufficiency (Unstable Angina): An Examination of 50 Case Studies.”
