Claudio Cardoso de Castro

Claudio Cardoso de Castro was born on February 5, 1944, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to João Cardoso de Castro and Yedda Pereira de Castro.

He is a class of 1966 medical graduate from the College of Medicine of the now defunct University of Brazil (current Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ). During his university studies, the young medical student started to take an interest in surgery and kept in close touch with the institution’s Department of Anatomy, where he worked as a voluntary monitor from 1962 to 1966. 

Upon completion of his Residency in General Surgery at Getúlio Vargas State Hospital, Castro chose to pursue a postgraduate program in Plastic Surgery at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), where he additionally served as a teaching instructor. In 1985, he completed his Master’s degree in Plastic Surgery at the same institution. 

In 1969, Dr. Castro was appointed as a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Human Anatomy of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), and in 1973, he was transferred to teach the subject of General Surgery at the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital. At the same time, the Department of General Surgery was established at the aforementioned medical institution, of which he served as Dean. 

Dr. Castro started working as a Professor at UERJ’s School of Medical Sciences in 1986, and 13 years later, due to the inauguration of faculty assistance divisions, he was designated to fulfill the role of Head of the Plastic Surgery Department. Furthermore, he rose to the rank of Head of the Plastic Surgery Division of the Brazilian College of Surgeons. 

Among his numerous achievements, Dr. Castro has 100 Brazilian and internationally-published papers and articles under his name, in addition to having penned 15 book chapters and authored two books: “Cirurgia do Rejuvenescimento Facial” (“Facial Rejuvenation Surgery”) and “Ritidoplastia – Arte e Ciência” (“Rhytidoplasty – Art and Science”). 

The acclaimed surgeon also holds membership to a host of medical societies, such as the Brazilian College of Surgeons, Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, American College of Surgeons, American Society for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. 

In 1982, Dr. Castro received the Brazilian College of Surgeons-granted José de Mendonça award. Moreover, he served as President of the Rio de Janeiro branch of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery from 1994 to 1995, and afterwards, from 1988 to 2004, as Science Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery

The recognized surgeon and scholar holds experience in the field of medicine with a special focus on Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, working mainly in plastic surgery, rhytidoplasty, mammoplasty and abdominoplasty proceedings.

During his candidacy to secure the title of Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Claudio de Castro submitted a dissertation named “Surgery of the Lower Third Part the Face and Neck: Anatomic and Surgical Connotations.”
