Delta Madureira Filho

Delta Madureira Filho was born on September 7, 1949, in the city of Cachoeira de Itapemirim in the State of Espírito Santo, to Delta Madureira and Maria Glória Machado Madureira.

He graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Campos (FMC) in 1973, and shortly afterwards, in 1975, completed a Specialization Program in General Surgery at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). To top off his education, Madureira Filho finished a Master’s degree in 1977 and a Ph.D. in General Surgery from the aforementioned university the following year, in addition to being granted the position of Associate Professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1990. 

Furthermore, Dr. Madureira Filho coordinated the Surgery Internship Division at the Department of Surgery of UFRJ’s Faculty of Medicine. Other titles in the surgeon’s notable resume include Professor of Gastroenterology at the Graduate program of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine in 1988, Full Professor in the Graduate program in General Surgery offered by the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), and Associate Professor of General Surgery at UFRJ. 

Moreover, Dr. Madureira Filho served as Coordinator of the Medical Division of the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ) from 1993 to 1994, and from 2003 to 2006, fulfilled the role of Head of the General Surgery Department at UFRJ’s Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital, where he additionally worked as Coordinator of the Laparoscopic Surgery Program during two tenures: 1994 to 2002, and 2002 to 2006.  

Additionally, the acclaimed surgeon amassed the positions of General Surgeon at Hospital Samaritano, the Casa de Saúde São José medical facility and the Sorocaba Medical Center in the State of São Paulo. Furthermore, the National Institute for Medical and Social Security (INAMPS) appointed him as a Medical Surgeon. His main area of interest and research concerns gallbladder surgery and the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Dr. Madureira Filho holds membership to several medical societies both in Brazil and abroad, including the Rio de Janeiro-based Brazilian College of Surgeons; Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery in São Paulo; American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons of Los Angeles in the U.S.; Brazilian Society of Gastroenterology; and Rio de Janeiro’s Association of Gastroenterology, of which he also served as President during two terms: 1988 to 1989, and 1990 to 1991. Finally, he was granted the title of Full Member of the State of Rio de Janeiro Society of Videoendoscopy Surgery in 1994.  

Moreover, Dr. Madureira Filho was designated as a Foreign Correspondent Member of the Peruvian Society of Gastroenterology in 1992, the Peruvian Academy of Surgery in 1996 and the Bolivian Society of Gastroenterology in 1991. In addition, he was granted membership to the Cuban Gastroenterology Society in 1991.   

Last but not least, the acclaimed surgeon was decorated with the Newton Braga order of merit conferred by the Cachoeira de Itapemirim district in 1992, and with the Campos Citizen certificate by the City of Campos Municipal City Hall in 1998. 

During his candidacy to secure a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Delta Madureira Filho submitted an essay addressing the subject of “Megaesophagus: Results of Surgical Treatment by Video laparoscopy.”
