Eduardo Lopes Pontes

Eduardo Lopes Pontes was born on October 13, 1947, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to José de Paula Lopes Pontes and Ruth Coelho de Almeida Lopes Pontes. The family’s medical tradition spans three generations. 

Lopes Pontes graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1975 and then went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Internal Medicine from the University of Oxford, England, in 1982, after approval of his thesis titled “Local Immune Responses in Ulcerative Colitis.”

The young physician kicked off his career in medicine as a Medical Resident in an Internal Medicine class taught at UFRJ’s Faculty of Medicine under the helm of Professor J.P. Lopes Pontes, a position he held from 1976 to 1977. 

Throughout his prolific career, Dr. Lopes Pontes carried out several roles in a host of institutions, including Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; Full Professor at the Souza Marques Technical-Educational School of Medicine; Adjunct Professor at Gama Filho University; and Board Member of the Brazilian Study Group of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Moreover, the esteemed physician served as Coordinator of the Medical Residency Program in Gastroenterology at the UFRJ Faculty of Medicine from 1986 to 1989 and as Coordinator of the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital Specialization Program on Digestive Tract Diseases from 1985 to 1986.  

Dr. Lopes Pontes was additionally bestowed the title of Honorary Associate Member of the Brazilian Organization for Crohn’s disease and Colitis, was a Member of the Ethics Committee of the Rio de Janeiro Gastroenterological Society from 2013 to 2014 and was granted the designation of Foreign Member of the British Society of Gastroenterology in 1995. 

Currently, the physician holds the job title of Head of the 9th Medical Ward (Internal Medicine) at Rio de Janeiro’s Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital and also conducts research studies on inflammatory bowel diseases, with a special focus on irritable bowel syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease.  

During his run to secure full membership to the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Eduardo Lopes Pontes submitted a dissertation entitled “Intestinal and Extraintestinal Complications in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: A Personal Viewpoint.”
