Eduardo Moacyr Krieger

Eduardo Moacyr Krieger was born on June 27, 1928, in the city of Cerro Lago in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. He chose to pursue his medical studies at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Porto Alegre, graduating in 1953.

In 1954, the recently graduated medical student joined a program aimed at educating physiologists that was envisioned and introduced by Professor Rubens Maciel, through an agreement between the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) and the physiology institute of Professor Bernardo Houssay, a 1947 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. To conclude his medical education, the physician studied Cardiovascular Physiology, under the supervision of Professor W. Hamilton in the city of Augusta, Georgia, in the United States, from 1956 to 1957.

Upon returning to Brazil, Dr. Moacyr Krieger was appointed to work at the newly established University of São Paulo (USP) Medical School at Ribeirão Preto’s (FRMRPUSP) Department of Physiology led by neurophysiology specialist Professor Miguel Covian. It was there that he undertook his entire academic career, starting as a Lecturer and eventually rising to the rank of Full Professor in 1974, during which time he established a cardiovascular physiology group tasked with training new groups of researchers.

After retiring from the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto in 1985, Dr. Moacyr Krieger was appointed as a physician at the Heart Institute (InCor) of the University of São Paulo Hospital das Clínicas university hospital complex, where he led a multidisciplinary research team until 2010. Shortly afterwards, he was assigned the position of Coordinator of the University of São Paulo (USP) Heart Institute’s (Incor) Translational Cardiology Program.

Dr. Moacyr Krieger’s main research line involves studying blood pressure regulation mechanisms in experimental hypertension models, particularly neurogenic mechanisms. A paper he wrote tackled the subject of the universally employed sino-aortic denervation method in rats. Moreover, his academic studies addressing the subject of baroreceptors in both hypertension and hypotension are widely known.

In addition, Dr. Moacyr Krieger was a pioneer in the use of rats as models for studying blood pressure regulation during sleep and physical activities, as well as for recording sympathetic activity under physiological conditions.

The acclaimed physician and scholar was honored with the titles of Emeritus Professor by the USP Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto and Professor Honoris Causa by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Furthermore, he was elected President of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), a position he held from 1993 to 2007.

Among the wide host of accolades and distinctions that Dr. Moacyr Krieger amassed throughout his prolific career, some of the highlights include the National Order of Scientific Merit in the grade of Grand Cross in 1994; Military Engineer Legion of Merit in the rank of Commander; TWAS Medal Lectures – at the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World in 2005; Anísio Teixeira award granted by the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES)/Ministry of Education (MEC) in 2001; and the Almirante Álvaro Alberto medal (Medicine and Public Health) issued by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development in 1998.

To further add to his list of achievements, Dr. Moacyr Krieger received the Lifetime Achievement award of the Interamerican Society of Hypertension in 1997; Mühlblock Award in 2007 – International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS); and finally, the Brazilian Society of Cardiology-granted Dedicação à Pesquisa (Research Dedication) award in 2005.

In addition, Dr. Moacyr Krieger serves as Head of the International Relations Department at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, is a Member of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development and holds the position of Vice-President of the São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP.

During his submission for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Eduardo Moacyr Krieger presented a dissertation addressing “The Regulation Exerted by Baroreceptors on the Sympathetic Nervous System’s Physical and Tonic Activity.”
