Eliete Bouskela

Eliete Bouskela was born on February 15 in the city of Uberlândia in the State of Minas Gerais. 

She graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1973, and two years later, successfully completed a Master’s degree in Biophysics at the aforementioned institution. To conclude her medical studies, Dr. Bouskela obtained a Ph.D. in Physiology, also from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in 1978.

The physician’s scientific career began in 1969 at the Institute of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho (IBCCF), where she was tasked with testing constant flow solutions required for maintaining the Langendorff perfused isolated mammalian heart.

In March 1987, she took on a position at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics of the University of Lund in Sweden, first as a Visiting Professor, and later on – after passing a teaching qualification examination in May 1992 – as an Associate Professor.

Dr. Bouskela holds numerous titles and positions at several institutions, such as Full Professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and Assistant Coordinator of Clinical Research of the postgraduate program in Clinical and Experimental Pathophysiology (Grade 7 of the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES, Medicine I). Furthermore, she is the Technology Director at the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ), with said institution additionally honoring her with its prestigious Scientist of Our State distinction.  

To further add to her already impressive credentials, the recognized physician and scholar is a Member of the editorial board of the Microvascular Research Journal (Elsevier, San Diego, CA, USA, impact factor 2.126) and the Microcirculation Journal (Wiley-Blackwell, Hoboken, NJ, USA, impact factor 2.565). In addition, she serves as an Advisor to Brazil’s Ministry of Health (MS) and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), is a 1b-certified researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and runs the Multidisciplinary Centre for Research into Obesity (CEMPO). 

Dr. Bouskela also established the Laboratory for Research in Microcirculation (LPM) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and leads the Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Research on Vascular Biology (BioVasc), where she works with patients and experimental models to attempt to prove the theory whereby microvascular and endothelial dysfunction precede macrovascular disease.

The physician holds the positions of Full Member at the Health Division of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and Full Member at the Medicine Division of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and furthermore, in 2008 was granted the privilege of becoming Brazil’s first ever woman to be admitted to the French National Academy of Medicine. Inaugurated in 1820, the Paris-based institution is the oldest and one of the most traditional medical societies in the world. 

Dr. Bouskela contributes as an Editor to numerous publications, namely the Intensive Care Medicine; American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulatory Physiology; Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology; Brain Research; European Journal of Pharmacology; British Journal of Pharmacology; Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology; Journal of Vascular Research; Critical Care; Hypertension; and Neurotoxicity Research, among others.

As one of Brazil’s main female physicians, Dr. Bouskela holds experience in the field of Cardiovascular Physiology (Microcirculation) and Clinical Research, focusing mostly on the subjects of regulation of microvascular reactivity in obesity; insulin resistance; septic and hemorrhagic shock; and early detection of cardiovascular risk through non-invasive methods.

Last but certainly not least, Dr. Eliete Bouskela was designated by the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro to serve as President of the Higher Council of the Carlos Chagas Filho State of Rio de Janeiro Research Foundation (FAPERJ) for the 2013-2016 term.
