Fernanda Freire Tovar-Moll was born on June 16 in the Rio de Janeiro State city of Niterói, to Dr. Ricardo Bastos Tovar, a celebrated pediatrician, and Dr. Ana Maria Freire Tovar, a university professor specialized in the field of biochemistry.
Both her parents encouraged Tovar-Moll to explore her interest in science from an early age, which later led her to enroll at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) medical program and earn her diploma in 1999. At UFRJ, she completed a Master’s degree in Morphological Sciences in 2002, a Residency Program specialized in Radiology the following year, and a Ph.D. in Morphological Sciences in 2007. To further add to her education, Dr. Tovar-Moll conducted post-doctoral research activities as a Postdoctoral Visiting Fellow both at the U.S. National Institutes of Health from 2004 to 2007 and at UFRJ’s Departamento Clínico de Neuroimunologia e Doenças Desmielinizantes (“Clinical Department of Neuroimmunology and Demyelinating Diseases,” freely translated) in 2008.
From 2010 to 2019, Dr. Tovar-Moll worked as an adjunct professor at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, whereas she has currently served as a voluntary collaborating professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) National Center for Structural Biology and Bioimaging (CENABIO) since 2022. Furthermore, she has contributed as a permanent advisor at that same institution’s Graduate Program in Morphological Sciences (PCM-UFRJ) since 2012, where she was additionally part of its Coordination Committee from 2013 to 2015. Dr. Tovar-Moll has also occupied the position of permanent advisor at the Postgraduate Program in Medical Sciences at the D’Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR) since 2017, as well as collaborating advisor in the Postgraduate Program in Clinical Radiology offered by the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) Department of Diagnostic Imaging (DDI) since 2018.
In 2010, the lauded physician and scholar helped to co-found IDOR, a private non-profit organization where she further held the position of Scientific Director from that same year, up to 2016, in addition to Scientific and Operational Director of its Clinical Research Units. There, she was responsible for overseeing both observational and interventional clinical studies conducted across 10 Brazilian states. With different types of funding granted by numerous Brazilian and foreign parties such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), the organization was tasked with researching vaccine clinical trials for COVID-19 in 2020. In addition, Dr. Tovar-Moll fulfilled the role of IDOR’s Research Director from 2021 to 2023, and since 2018, has served as the institution’s President.
Since 2016, Dr. Tovar-Moll has been an affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) as well as a member, researcher, and president of the board of the Brazilian Network of Science for Education (Rede CpE1). Moreover, since 2018 she has served as a consulting member and co-founded of the Associação Brasileira para as Desordens do Corpo Caloso (ABrDCC) (“Brazilian Association for Corpus Callosum Disorders,” freely translated), a non-profit organization whose goal is to assist parents and individuals suffering from agenesis of the corpus callosum as well as from additional developmental disorders. In addition, Dr. Tovar-Moll has composed the Advisory Board of the University of São Paulo (USP) Medical School Foundation (FFM) since 2020 and is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology’s (ABNc) Consensus for the Treatment of Dementia as of 2022.
Among the many accolades Dr. Tovar-Moll has received for her contributions to the field of medicine, some of the main ones include the NIH Research Fellowship Award in 2004, and the Young Scientist of the State of Rio de Janeiro Award granted by the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for the Support of Research in the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) in two occasions: 2012 and 2015.
Dr. Fernanda Freire Tovar-Moll was elected a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) on August 3, 2023, after submitting a paper titled “Mapping Acute and Long-Term Neuropsychiatric Manifestations in COVID-19.” That same year, on October 24, she was officially inaugurated and welcomed into the institution by fellow ANM Member Jerson Lima.
