Fernando Pires Vaz

Fernando Pires Vaz was born on February 16, 1943, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to Octávio Freitas Vaz and Maria de Lourdes Pires de Castro Vaz.

In 1967, he completed a Bachelor of Medicine at the former Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, now the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), deciding, later on, to specialize in the field of Urology. Shortly thereafter, from 1969 to 1974, he pursued a Residency program in Boston in the U.S. and concluded his medical education upon obtaining a Specialist degree in Urology from both the Brazilian Society of Urology and the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine (CFM).

In July 1973, the physician was chosen to head the Urology Departments of Chelsea Veterans Hospital, under the guidance of the Lahey Clinic medical staff, as well as those of the New England Deaconess Hospital and Tufts University. Additionally, he was actively involved in the kidney transplant program as part of its surgical staff, during which time he was in charge of providing expert opinions for the Department of Urology. 

After deciding to return to Brazil, Dr. Pires Vaz passed the American Board of Urology exam and subsequently received the American Medical Association-granted Physicians Award in 1974, in recognition of his commitment to constantly seeking professional improvement. 

The physician worked at the Souza Aguiar Hospital from 1974 to 1976 and since 1974 has held the title of Head of the Urology Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro Government Employee Hospital (HSE-RJ). Moreover, he leads two private Urology clinics, in addition to serving as an Urologist at Samaritano Hospital and overseeing the urological staffs of Copa D’or Hospital, Barra D’or Hospital and the Santa Lúcia medical institution. 

As a scholar, Dr. Pires Vaz has penned several book chapters both on his area of expertise and on other subjects. He additionally supervised over 40 urology residents throughout Brazil.  

Among his many distinctions and positions, Dr. Pires Vaz is a Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU), of which he served as Technical Director in several departments as well as composing the association’s Ethics Committee; Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons; and Full Member of the State of Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society. Outside of Brazil, he holds membership to the American Urological Association and the American College of Surgeons. Last but not least, the renowned physician is the Founding Member and Technical Council Member of the Urotech Institute of Urology in Rio de Janeiro. 

While running for a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Fernando Pires Vaz submitted a paper by the name of “Surgical Treatment of Localized Prostate Cancer.”
