Francisco Nicanor Araruna de Macedo

Francisco Nicanor Araruna de Macedo was born on April 25, 1960, in the city of Missão Velha in the State of Ceará, to José Macedo Coelho and Ana Anilete Araruna Macedo. He graduated in Medicine from the now defunct Pernambuco Higher Education Foundation (FESP), the current University of Pernambuco (UPE), in 1984. Shortly afterwards, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to pursue a general surgery residency program at the Marcílio Dias Naval Hospital from 1985 to 1987.

That same year, the young physician completed another medical residency program, this time in pediatric surgery, at the Hospital da Lagoa medical facility in Rio de Janeiro and remained there until 1990. Nicanor then decided to further pursue and specialize in pediatric surgery at the Carlos Chagas Postgraduate Medical Institute from 1987 to 1988. In the following years, he sought to continuously hone his skills alongside his theoretical know-how, which led him to enroll at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation Child and Women’s Master’s Program in 1999 and earn his diploma in 2001. The following year, Dr. Nicanor was appointed as a Visiting Professor at the Montreal Children’s Hospital Pediatric Urology Department (McGill University in Canada). Furthermore, he was granted the title of Fellow in Pediatric Urology at the Hospital for Sick Children of the University of Toronto, also in Canada, from 2005 to 2006.

Dr. Nicanor pursued his entire academic career at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO)’s Department of General and Specialized Surgery and served as an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Pediatric Surgery subject taught at the Medical and Surgery School of the Graffée and Guinle University Hospital. In that same institution, Nicanor was appointed as Head of the Pediatric Surgery Department and as a deliberative member of the surgical clinics’ decision-making body, and additionally established and supervised the pediatric surgery department’s medical residency program. The physician also served as a level-1 Adjunct Professor at the Child and Adolescent Pediatric Surgery Clinic of the Universidade do Grande Rio (Unigranrio) Medical School from 2001 to 2013. In addition, he was appointed as Head of the General Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology Department at the Hospital Municipal Jesus (HMJ) medical institution, a position he held from 2002 to 2013.

Dr. Nicanor also holds extensive experience when it comes to charitable activities, more specifically in the field of pediatric urology, and led efforts to both establish and run the “Brazilian Multi-Institutional Cooperative Group for the Treatment of Bladder Exstrophy-Epispadias-Cloaca Complex through the Kelly Procedure” (freely translated). The project was kicked off at the State Children’s Hospital (Rio de Janeiro State Health Department – D’Or Institute), where its first surgeries took place. 

Moreover, the lauded physician is a member of numerous Brazilian scientific institutions, such as the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC), in addition to holding the status of Full Member at the Brazilian Association of Pediatric Surgery (CIPE), and Full Member at the Brazilian Society of Videosurgery (SOBRACIL).On May 18, 2023, Dr. Francisco Nicanor was elected a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM) after submitting an essay titled “Multidisciplinary Treatment of the Wilms Tumor in Children: A Personal Experience with Twenty-Three Patients” (freely translated). His inauguration ceremony was held on August 4, 2023, and he was greeted by fellow Academy Member Celso Portela.
