The son of Gerson Augusto Canedo de Magalhães and Maria Geralda Fonseca de Magalhães, Gerson Canedo de Magalhães was born on October 26, 1938, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
He graduated from the National College of Medicine in 1962, during which time he was awarded the University of Brazil (current Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) distinction for graduating among the top 10 best students of his class.
Shortly thereafter, Canedo de Magalhães took on the position of Intern of an Internal Medicine subject taught at the National College of Medicine, under the tutorship of Luiz Gentil Feijó, which he held from 1959 to 1962.
Continuing his education, the young physician headed to London, England, enrolling at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. Back in Brazil, he passed public examinations to intern at the Rio de Janeiro City Hall as well as at SAMDU, a now discontinued President Eurico Dutra-established medical and emergency public home care service, joining the institution’s Clinical Neurology-focused Internal Medicine department. In addition, he was part of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Faculty of Medical Sciences for 11 years, starting in 1963.
Dr. Canedo de Magalhães was further granted scholarships by the British Council to fulfill a 14-month term as a Post-Graduate Fellow at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, studying and working at several of the institute’s departments, namely the Clinical Neurology, Neuropathology, Electroencephalography, Electromyography (Middlesex Hospital), and Neuro-Otology units.
In addition, the recognized physician was approved with honors in diploma-based evaluations and exams to secure the position of Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1970. He worked extensively in the field, joining the Neurology Departments of several institutions, including the Pedro Ernesto Hospital (1963-1974); Rio de Janeiro Fire Brigade (1965-1977); Rio de Janeiro Government Employee Hospital (HSE-RJ); General Hospital of Bonsucesso (1988-1991); and finally, the Beneficiência Portuguesa Hospital (1972-2003), a medical facility he led for three decades.
Dr. Canedo de Magalhães would additionally pass another public exam in 1964 to serve as a clinician at the former State of Guanabara’s – current State of Rio de Janeiro – Military Police and as a neurologist both at the Brazilian Air Force in 1969, and that same year, at Suseme, a City of Rio de Janeiro-led examination that enables medical interns to work in public health institutions.
To further add to his remarkable resume, he was granted membership to the Brazilian Academy of Neurology in 1970, the American Academy of Neurology in 1994, and Britain’s Royal Society of Medicine in 2000.
Other accolades and distinctions amassed throughout Dr. Canedo de Magalhães’ career include Full Professor at the Neurology postgraduate program offered by the Carlos Chagas Institute in 1981 and Full Professor at the Federal State University of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) School of Medicine in 1984, after finishing second in said institution’s public admissions exam and which earned him a spot as an Associate Professor there. Additionally, he was approved in yet another diploma-based admissions examination to work as a Full Professor at the State of Rio de Janeiro University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences in 1993, and by unanimous vote, was elected Head of the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital. Furthermore, the physician taught the subject of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine of Vassouras in Valença.
During his candidacy to be appointed as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Gerson Canedo de Magalhães presented a dissertation titled “Sudden Death and the Nervous System.”
