He graduated in Medicine in 1981 from the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto of the University of São Paulo (USP), where he additionally completed his undergraduate research internship (URI) at the Department of Pharmacology, under the direction of Professor Dr. Sérgio Henrique Ferreira. He also finished another undergraduate program, this time in Pharmacy, at Italy’s University of Naples Federico II in 2010.

Shortly after graduating, De Nucci moved to London, where he worked at the Prostaglandin Research Department of Wellcome Research Laboratories from 1982 to 1986, under the mentorship of Dr. Salvador Moncada, FRS. He pursued his Ph.D.  at the University of London’s Royal College of Surgeons in 1986, and that same year, went on to intern as a postdoctoral student at the William Harvey Research Institute of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College until 1989, under the helm of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Sir John Vane. In 1989, upon deciding to return to Brazil, Dr. De Nucci was appointed as an Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmacology of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) School of Medical Sciences. His research work on inflammatory responses allowed for the development, in 1999, of new chemical structures that ultimately led to the first-ever patent of an anti-inflammatory drug produced in Brazil and developed by a Brazilian pharmaceutical company.

Moreover, the physician serves as a Full Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology at both the Biomedical Sciences Institute of the University of São Paulo (USP) and Unicamp’s School of Medical Sciences.

In 1997, Dr. De Nucci was responsible for establishing the USP Cartesius Analytics Laboratory of the Department of Pharmacology, which accounts for close to 60% of all research studies on bioequivalence conducted in Brazil.

On September 12, 1999, in turn, the esteemed physician was ranked the 4th researcher in Biochemistry with the highest number of international citations, according to National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) records.

Since 2009, Dr. De Nucci has held the position of Full Member at the Brazilian Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences, whereas in 2011 he was granted the same distinction at the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (Biomedical Sciences Division). In 2009, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to medicine, the physician was honored with the title of Distinguished Citizen by the City of Campinas City Council.
