Giovanni Guido Cerri

The son of Vittorio Cerri and Elma Facchin Cerri, Giovanni Guido Cerri was born on October 9, 1953, in the city of Milan in Italy. 

Two years later, his family immigrated to Brazil, and later on, as a college student, Cerri started to specialize in the field of Radiology, taking on several leadership roles at important Brazilian and international organizations. In 1976, he graduated from the University of São Paulo School of Medicine (FMUSP), where he additionally pursued his Residency and doctoral studies.

Dr. Cerri would subsequently be appointed as Head of the Radiology Institute of the University of São Paulo’s School of Medicine Hospital das Clínicas (HFCMUSP) university hospital complex. 

The Italian-born physician was first designated as an Associate Professor at the aforementioned institution in 1986, and one year later and up to 1989, served as President of the Radiological and Diagnostic Imaging Society of São Paulo (SPR). In recognition of his leadership abilities, Dr. Cerri was elected President of the Brazilian College of Radiology for the 1989-1991 term, in addition to contributing as Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Radiation Sciences until 2006.  

Moreover, the acknowledged doctor and scholar has served as a Full Professor of Radiology since 1996, President of the Postgraduate Commission and Medical Director of the University of São Paulo School of Medicine’s (FMUSP) Hospital das Clínicas university hospital complex between 1998 and 2002. Additionally, he was chosen to head FMUSP as well as preside over the Hospital das Clínicas Advisory Board. To further add to his already notable credentials, Dr. Cerri was voted President and Scientific Director of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, holding the first position from 2006 to 2009 and the latter for the 2009-2011 term. In January 2011, in turn, he was appointed as Secretary of Health for the State of São Paulo, where he is currently tasked with enhancing the state’s health care standards and tackling issues such as organ transplantations and cancer treatment. In addition, the physician leads efforts to curb infant mortality rates and increase the number of hospital beds. 

Dr. Cerri also actively participates in multiple medical associations and societies, currently serving as President of the Advisory Board of the University of São Paulo’s Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo. 

When it comes to producing scientific articles, Dr. Cerri has penned around 300 papers in Brazilian as well as in foreign publications, 22 books and nearly 50 articles in medical journals and magazines, mentored 48 students with their theses, and finally, participated in conferences across 25 countries. 

For his outstanding contributions to medicine, he has amassed over 30 awards and distinctions granted by both Brazilian and international societies.  

Whilst applying for full membership at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Giovanni Guido Cerri submitted an essay by the name of “Positron Emission Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PET/MR): Initial Experiences at the School of Medicine’s Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo.”
