Henrique Murad

Henrique Murad was born on August 17, 1943, in the city of Recife in the State of Pernambuco, to Alberto Murad and Helena de Oliveira Murad.

In 1967, he graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and was awarded the University of Brazil award, a distinction granted to the top 10 students of each graduating class. He pursued a Residency in General Surgery at the same institution, under the supervision of Professor Mariano Augusto de Andrade, from 1968 to 1969, as well as an additional Residency in the area of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the Chicago-based University of Illinois in the United States from 1973 to 1976. 

During this time, his main mentors were Professor W. Dudley Johnson and Professor Hiram T. Langston. To conclude his medical education, Murad secured a Master’s degree in 1978, followed by a Ph.D. four years later, both of them in Medicine (General Surgery at the Thoracic Department) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).  

Dr. Murad’s entire academic career unfolded at UFRJ, starting as a Lecturer in 1978, rising to the rank of Full Member of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery after being approved in a public, diploma-based admissions exam, and finally, retiring in 2013 upon reaching the maximum number of years permitted to work in Brazil’s public services under the Brazilian legislation. Furthermore, he was honored with the title of Emeritus Professor at UFRJ in 2016.

The recognized surgeon additionally led the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital for over 20 years, during which time he was in charge of training numerous residents in the field of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. He also served as Head of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Surgery Department from 2009 to 2013, preceded by a stint as Vice-President at the same institution’s Faculty of Medicine between 1998 and 2002. Throughout his time at UFRJ, Dr. Murad supervised and mentored multiple Master’s and Doctoral students in the organization’s Postgraduate Program in Medicine (General Surgery – Thoracic Division).  

Dr. Murad took part in numerous Master’s and Ph.D. theses and in higher education public college admissions examination boards at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro as well as in other universities. He further holds extensive experience in the field of Cardiovascular Surgery, with a special focus in the surgical treatment of aortic valve disease, in addition to myocardial revascularization. 

The surgeon was also appointed as a Full Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) Graduate Program in Medicine in 2003. 

Furthermore, Dr. Murad established the State of Rio de Janeiro Military Police Vascular Surgery Department, where he worked from 1978 to 1993, and has led the Cardiovascular Surgery Unit of the São Vicente de Paulo Hospital since 1982.

In addition, he has joined a number of medical societies both in Brazil and abroad, playing an important role when it comes to scientific output. He is a Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons; Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC); Brazilian Society for Cardiovascular Surgery (SBCCV); American College of Surgeons; Society of Thoracic Surgeons of North America; and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, among others.  

Upon running for a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Henrique Murad presented a dissertation named “Benign Heart Tumors.” He was a member of the ANM Board of Directors for three terms, holding a number of positions.
