Jacob Kligerman

Jacob Kligerman was born on May 5, 1940, in Nilópolis in the State of Rio de Janeiro, to Leybus Kligerman e Bertha Kligerman.

He decided to pursue an undergraduate degree in Medicine at the Rio de Janeiro School of Medicine and Surgery, graduating in 1964. Shortly after starting his medical studies, Kligerman chose to specialize in the field of Oncology, and from 1960 to 1964, interned at the National Cancer Institute’s (INCA) Department of Head and Neck Surgery, where he worked as a resident between 1964 and 1967. In 1972, he was appointed as a Visiting Physician by the MD Anderson’s Head and Neck Cancer Center in the U.S.

In 1958, Dr. Kligerman obtained a specialist degree in Cancerology from the Brazilian Society of Cancerology, while in 1981 he successfully completed another specialization program, this time in the area of Head and Neck Surgery, at the Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery. 

Upon returning to Brazil, the surgeon pioneered the skull base surgery, as well as randomized studies and the use of the state-of-the-art method of organ reconstruction and preservation. 

Furthermore, he worked at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro’s (PUC-Rio) Graduate Program in Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 1972, Lecturer from 1969 to 1974, and as an Associate Professor from 1984 to 1994. 

In his scientific academic activities, Dr. Kligerman was granted the position of Member of the American Medical Association Council in Brazil and Editor of the Journal of the Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC). 

In 1993, after serving as Head of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery for over 18 years, the recognized surgeon rose to the rank of Head of the Hospital of the National Cancer Institute (INCA), a position he held until 1996. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed as Head of INCA by the Brazilian Ministry of Health.

Dr. Kligerman is additionally part of numerous societies, such as the American Head and Neck Society and American College of Surgeons, as well as a Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons, Active Member of the Brazilian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervical Facial Surgery, and Full Member of the Brazilian Cancerology Society. 

Furthermore, he is a Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery and the State of Rio de Janeiro Cancerology Society. Dr. Kligerman also served as President of the Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery from 1982 to 1982, and as Vice-President at the same institution during 1977 to 1979. 

In 2005, Dr. Kligerman was appointed as the Municipal Secretary of Health of Rio de Janeiro and has been honored with numerous tributes and distinctions, among them the Pioneiras Na’amat Certificate of Honor; Diploma do Mestre (Master Diploma) from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1982; Santos-Dumont Merit Medal in 1983; and the Tamandaré Medal of Merit from the Brazilian Navy a year before. Last but not least, he was bestowed the title of Distinguished Citizen of the State of Rio de Janeiro under resolution No. 077 of 1977.

Upon applying for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Jacob Kligerman submitted an essay entitled “Parotid Gland Tumors.”
