Jerson Lima da Silva was born on February 29, 1960, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
He is a 1984 Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) medical graduate and completed a Ph.D. from the UFRJ Institute of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho (IBCCF) in 1987.
Among Dr. Silva’s many titles, some include Full Professor at UFRJ’s Institute of Medical Biochemistry, Head of the Jiri Jonas National Center for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology for Structural Biology and Bioimaging (INBEB). In addition, he has held the position of Scientific Director at the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ) since 2003.
The Rio de Janeiro-born physician serves as Head of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Laboratory of Thermodynamics of Proteins and Viral Structures (LTPV), and from 1994 to 1997, led the aforementioned institution’s Department of Medical Biochemistry. He is the current Coordinator of UFRJ’s National Center of Macromolecular Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (CNRMN), which features high-field (600 to 400 MHz) MRI machines. As the first center of its kind in all of Brazil, the facility endeavors to drastically advance research studies in the field of the Structure of Biological Macromolecules in the country.
The Rio de Janeiro-born physician was granted a Level A1 Researcher qualification by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in 1987. Moreover, he has amassed numerous awards and financial aid throughout his successful career, including from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1991; European Economic Community in 1991; the shared Health Sendas Award in Pediatric Infectious Diseases in 1995; Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1997 to 2002; the shared Unibanco National Award in Medicine in 1998; and the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology-granted Financial Aid for Excellence Centers.
To top off his long list of accolades, Dr. da Silva received the prestigious Scientist of our State distinction from the State of Rio de Janeiro five times (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009); National Order of Scientific Merit conferred by the Brazil’s Presidential Office in the ranks of Commander in 2002 and of Grand Cross in 2009; the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Award in the field of Biology for the Developing World (TWAS); and finally, the 2009 Conrado Wessel Foundation Award in Science and Culture in 2010.
The acknowledged doctor is a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the Developing World, and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Coordenação de Programas de Estudos Avançados (Coordination of Advanced Studies Programs – COPEA).
As a scholar, Dr. Silva has authored over 140 scientific articles and his research studies have been published in high-impact journals. Moreover, he serves as an advisor to both Brazilian and foreign funding agencies, as well as to domestic and international journals. His laboratory has provided significant contributions to the fields of structural biology, protein folding, virus assembly, and to help understand mechanisms in charge of protein misfolding, which is important in a host of human diseases, including cancer, prion diseases and Parkinson’s disease.
