Jorge Fonte de Rezende Filho

Jorge Fonte de Rezende Filho was born on May 21, 1966, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to Jorge Fonte de Rezende and Carmem de Barros de Castro e Rezende.

He graduated in Medicine in 1989 from the University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), however, before that, while starting his undergraduate studies five years prior, he was also admitted to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia General Hospital of Rio de Janeiro, where he interned at the 33rd Ward. In 1987, the young medical student rose to the rank of Intern Assistant. 

Shortly after graduating, Rezende Filho passed a public examination to become a Resident at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of the Clementino Fraga University Hospital, working at both the institution’s Hospital and Maternity-School.  

Dr. Rezende Filho was also approved at a public examination to start a Specialization Program in Gynecology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1990, and one year before, interned at London, England’s King’s College Hospital, under the mentorship of Professor Stuart Campbell, where he frequently served as a visiting clinician. 

He additionally worked as a visiting physician at the Institut de Puériculture de Paris’s (Paris Institute of Childcare) Service de Médecine et de Biologie Foetales (Department of Medicine and Fetal Biology) in 1991. That same year, he held the same position at both the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology of the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York and the Perinatal Unit of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences of Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Rezende Filho would then finish first in his class at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Master’s program, with a thesis by the name of “Normal Doppler Values of the Descending Aorta and the Common Carotid Artery of the Fetus.” In 1998 and also at UFRJ, he defended his doctoral thesis. 

He dedicated himself extensively to that same postgraduate program, and in 2015, helped to implement the institution’s Professional Master’s program in Perinatal Health.  

Furthermore, Dr. Rezende Filho has amassed numerous prestigious titles throughout his notable career, including serving as an Adjunct Professor at the Souza Marques Technical-Foundation’s School of Medicine since 1990, where he holds the position of Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. He was also approved as a Lecturer at the Specialization Program in Obstetrics offered by the Carlos Chagas Postgraduate Medical Institute, occupying that role from 1991 to 1998, as well as working as a Full Acting Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) Graduate Program in Medicine between 1992 and 2010. 

Moreover, the physician worked as an Associate Professor of Obstetrics at the Gama Filho University Faculty of Medicine from 2008 to 2013, in addition to serving as a Volunteer Professor of Obstetrics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s (UFRJ) Faculty of Medicine until 1993, at which time he passed a diploma-based public admissions examination to become a permanent staff member of the university, shortly thereafter being appointed as an Associate Professor. 

To further add to his already remarkable medical education, Dr. Rezende Filho completed a Health Management program at UFRJ’s COPPEAD postgraduate business school in 2000, after which time he delved into the world of academics by contributing to the 11th edition of the “Obstetrícia Fundamental” (“Essential Obstetrics”) book in 2008, a work that is used by most medical and nursing schools in Brazil.

In 2011, the physician was awarded the title of Full Professor of Obstetrics from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Two years later, he was appointed as Head of the Santa Lúcia Hospital and Maternity Emergency Obstetrics Service. 

In recognition of his substantial contributions to the field of medicine, he was honored with the Ivolino Vasconcelos Award in 2013 and the Fernando de Magalhães Medal two years later. 

During his run to secure a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. Jorge Fonte de Rezende Filho presented an essay entitled “Gestational Trophoblastic Disease.”
