José Augusto da Silva Messias

The son of Tarcísio Torres Messias and Marina Tati da Silva Messias, José Augusto da Silva Messias was born on May 31, 1949, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

He completed his elementary school studies at the Colégio Marista São José school in Rio de Janeiro and subsequently pursued his medical education at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) School of Medical Sciences (FCM), graduating in 1973. After finishing his Residency in Internal Medicine two years later, under the supervision of Professor Jayme Landman, the young physician began his academic career. 

Messias completed a Master’s degree in 1983 in Gastroenterology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and later on in 1989, was appointed as an Associate Professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). In 1994, he was approved as a Full Professor of Internal Medicine at the aforementioned institution’s Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM). 

He was then designated as a clinician at São Miguel Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, a position he held from 1974 to 1989, whereas from 1976 to 1984 he took on the same position at the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital.

After this time, Dr. Messias served as Head of the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital’s Resident, Intern, Staff and Scholarship Student Department (SREI) from 1976 to 1977, where he worked in the initial stages of its first-ever Unidade Clínica de Adolescentes (Center for Adolescent Health – UCA) in 1976, later renamed and currently known as the Núcleo de Estudos da Saúde do Adolescente (Nucleus of Studies on Adolescent Health) of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (NESA/UERJ), of which he has held the position of Director since 1995. 

Additionally, the lauded physician occupied several roles in the academic administration of the Faculty of Medicine, University, and the University Hospital. He was appointed three times to represent the Biomedical Center at the University Council, in addition to holding many other positions at the same hospital. These include Head of Outpatient Services from 1980 to 1981; Head of the General Medical Services Division from 1981 to 1983; Member of the Medical Residency Committee from 1989 to 1990; and finally, Member of the Permanent Scientific Committee. 

To further add to his long list of accomplishments, Dr. Messias amassed the position of Lato Sensu (non-degree graduate course) Coordinator at the State University of Rio de Janeiro’s Faculty of Medical Science (FCM/UERJ) Medical Residency Programs, during which time he was tasked with overseeing 36 different programs. 

In addition, he was elected President of the Rio de Janeiro Gastroenterology Association (AGRJ) for the 2009-2010 term; Full Member and Specialist at the State of Rio de Janeiro Association of Gastroenterology; Full Founding Member and Specialist of the Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery; and Member of the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB). 

Moreover, the physician was awarded the titles of Member of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC); Member of the New York Academy of Sciences; Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); and Member of the National Geographic Society (NGS). 

From 2001 to 2007, Dr. Messias was appointed as an Ad-Hoc Advisor to the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ), where he served as Coordinator of Medical Research. 

During his candidacy to secure Full Membership at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. José Augusto da Silva Messias presented a dissertation titled “Gastric Cancer: Between Desire and Reality.” At ANM, he was actively involved in three tenures, serving as the institution’s Official Speaker in two of them.
