José Carlos do Valle

José Carlos do Valle was born on June 4, 1940, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, to Francisco Felício do Valle and Maria de Lourdes Barros do Valle. He graduated in Medicine from the State University of Guanabara (UEG) – current State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) – in 1964.

Two years later, he was admitted to the Brazilian Ministry of Health’s National Cancer Institute (INCA), where he took on the roles of President of the Studies Center, Head of the Internal Medicine Department, Coordinator of Medical Residency and Head of the ICU, among others. Furthermore, in 1972 he was approved in a public admissions exam to serve as an Associate Professor and hold the position of Doctor of Internal Medicine at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio).

Dr. do Valle worked mostly at the State of Rio de Janeiro’s Baixada Fluminense region, where he fulfilled the roles of the district of São João do Meriti’s Municipal Health Secretary from 1970 to 1971, Municipal Health Secretary of Nova Iguaçu from 1976 to 1977, Founding President of the West Nova Iguaçu Rotary Club, and President of the Nova Iguaçu Medical Association. 

Furthermore, he partnered with fellow Academy Member and Professor Fioravanti Di Piero, along with other renowned physicians, to establish the Faculty of Medical Sciences of what is now the Iguaçu University (INIG), where he served as a Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Oncology for 13 years. 

From 1979 to 1985, Dr. do Valle served as Head of the National Institute for Medical and Social Security Hospital (INAMPS – Ministry of Health), at which time he revamped the institution, setting forth new guidelines for it and consequently being deemed a South American center of excellence by the Geneva, Switzerland-based International Fight against Cancer (UICC) union. Following INAMPS’ dissolution, the Oncology Hospital became part of the National Cancer Institute (INCA), later renamed the Hospital do Câncer II, an INCA unit specifically dedicated to oncological treatment. 

From 1991 to 1996, the lauded physician headed said institution’s Oncology Department, afterwards returning to the Hospital do Câncer I in Rio de Janeiro which, following his recommendations, established the Núcleo de Normas e Procedimentos (Center for Guidelines and Procedures), an institution he helped to set up and where he served as its first manager.

Dr. do Valle also held the titles of President of the Rio de Janeiro Cancerology Society from 1988 to 1991; President of the Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology (SBOC) from 1989 to 1991, at which time he presided over the 7th Brazilian Congress of Clinical Oncology; Honorary Member of the INCA Association of Former Medical Residents; and Vice-President of the Pan American Medical Association – Cancer Division (1988). 

In addition, he served as an Emeritus Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Cancerology; Emeritus Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Mastology; Full Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology; Full Member of the American College of Chest Physicians; and Full Member of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), among other associations. 

Throughout his career, Dr. do Valle also attended hundreds of congresses and conferences both in Brazil and abroad, in addition to programs at the MD Anderson Cancer Center (Texas, USA, 1978); Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (New York, USA, 1978); Cancer Institute of the Soviet Union (Moscow, USSR, 1986); and the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia (European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy, in 1999).

A recognized oncologist and scholar, do Valle published a host of articles and papers on cancer in Brazilian and international medical journals, as well as the following books: “Câncer Locorregional Avançado” (“Advanced Locoregional Cancer”); “Controle de Câncer” (“Cancer Control”): Uma Proposta de Integração Ensino-Pesquisa (“A Proposal for Research-Teaching Integration”), of which he coauthored three editions; and “A Semiologia e a Clínica nos Tempos dos Exames Complementares” (“Semiology and Clinical Practice in Times of Complementary Exams,” in conjunction with fellow Academy Members Mário Barreto Corrêa Lima and José Galvão Alves, as well as dozens of medicine-related book chapters.Among his extensive list of awards and honors, Dr. do Valle received the INCA Studies Center-granted Amadeu Fialho award in 1967; Cyanamid-Lederle national prize in 1991; Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM)-issued Costa Junior distinction in 1987; City of Nova Iguaçu Dr. Sales Teixeira Merit of Honor; Professor Dr. Oswaldo Cruz honor; and the Albert Sabin Medical Merit, both conferred by the Sociedade Cívica Cultural Brasileira (Brazilian Civic Cultural Society NGO). Last but certainly not least, he was bestowed the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George Knighthood by Prince Conmène Paléologue (Grand Master), among other accolades.
