José de Jesus Peixoto Camargo

José de Jesus Peixoto Camargo was born on August 6, 1946, in the city of Vacarias in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. 

He studied Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), specializing in Thoracic Surgery before graduating in 1970. 

Dr. Camargo holds a Master’s degree in Pulmonary Sciences from the aforementioned educational institution, became a Fellow in Thoracic Surgery from the Mayo Clinic Foundation in Rochester, USA, in 1981, and a Specialist in Thoracic Surgery from the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology’s Department of Thoracic Surgery in 1981. 

The surgeon pioneered lung transplantation in Brazil and Latin America in 1989, and two years later, became the first person ever outside of the United States to undertake a lung transplantation using live donors. Moreover, he is responsible for half of all lung transplants conducted in Brazil as of today, amounting to over 30,000 chest surgeries. Finally, he has hundreds of scientific papers and articles under his name and has given 900 conferences across 22 countries. 

Dr. Camargo served as a Professor in the subject of Thoracic Surgical Therapeutics in postgraduate medical programs in Pulmonology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in 1976 and as a Professor responsible for the Thoracic Surgery subject taught at the University of Passo Fundo (UPF) School of Medicine for the 1973-1980 term, in addition to holding the title of Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA).

To further add to his accomplishments, Dr. Camargo was the mastermind behind as well as the manager of the Porto Alegre-based Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital’s Center of Transplants, in addition to Chief Surgeon of the Thoracic Surgery Department at the aforementioned institution’s Pavilhão Pereira Filho, a reference center in Latin America when it comes to pulmonology and thoracic surgery.

Furthermore, the celebrated surgeon served as Head of the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology; Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and Governor for the 1986-1990 term, and from 2002 to 2006; Fellow of the International College of Surgeons; and Full Member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons. 

Dr. Camargo additionally held the titles of Founding Member of the Asociación Sudamericana de Cirurgia Toracica (South-American Association of Thoracic Surgery); Member of the Academia Sul-riograndense de Medicina (State of Rio Grande do Sul Academy of Medicine) in 1992; Honorary Member of the Sociedad de Tisiologia y Patologia Toracica (Society of Phthisiology and Thoracic Pathology) in 1990; and Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Thoracic Surgery (SBCT) in 1997. 

Last but not least, Dr. José de Jesus Peixoto Camargo has penned four books in his area of expertise, in addition to three other works titled ”Não pensem por mim” (“Do not Think for Me”), “A Tristeza pode Esperar” (“Sadness can Wait”), and “Do que Você Precisa para Ser Feliz” (“What do you Need to be Happy?”).
