He also received the Valadão Pimentel Vocational Award from the Rio de Janeiro National College of Medicine, the Brazilian Assistance Legion’s (LBA) Anchieta Medal and the Clementino Fraga Medal.

Furthermore, he was invited to join examination boards in charge of overseeing civil servant exams as well as roundtables both in Brazil and abroad. To top things off, Dr. Lopes Pontes published hundreds of papers and scientific articles.

In celebration of his extraordinary efforts and life, the Dr. José de Paula Lopes Fontes Family Clinic was established in 2010 in the neighborhood of Jacarepaguá in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

During his candidacy for a Full Member seat at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), he presented an essay on the “Reduction of Red Blood Cell Lifespan in Hepatic Cirrhosis.” Shortly thereafter, he held a number of positions in different departments of the institution and rose to the ranks of President, which he carried out from 1985 to 1987.
