José Leme Lopes

President of the National Academy of Medicine from 1971 to 1973 and 1979 to 1981

The son of Tito Lopes Carvalho da Silva and Azálea Leme Lopes, José Leme Lopes was born in Rio de Janeiro on October 20, 1904. 

He completed his undergraduate studies in medicine at the National College of Medicine of the now extinct University of Brazil (currently, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ) in 1982, upon successfully submitting a final paper titled “An Examination on the Acid-Base Balance of Blood and its Pathological Variations.”

On April 13, 1961, Dr Leme Lopes was inducted in as a Full Member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), after presenting an essay named “Depressive States in Patients,” and later on, in 1988, became an Emeritus Member, as well as serving two terms as President: 1971 to 1973, and 1979 to 1981.

The Rio de Janeiro-born doctor’s professional career began with a full-time position at the now defunct Dr. Eiras Hospital. Later, he was tasked with the mission of heading the University of Brazil (UFRJ) Instituto de Puericultura’s (Pediatric Institute) Department of Pediatric Neuropsychiatry, in addition to leading UFRJ’s Institute of Psychiatry. 

He rose to the ranks of Full Professor, and subsequently, to Emeritus Professor of the University of Brazil and the Federal University of Brazil’s National Colleges of Medicine, later working as a Professor of Psychiatry at several Rio de Janeiro schools. Also, Dr. Leme Lopes joined the Brazilian League of Mental Hygiene and the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry and Mental Hygiene, after which time he went on to establish and become the first President of the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry (ABP). 

Other honors bestowed upon him include the title of “Life Member” of the Society for Personality Assessment of New York and Member of both the Rorschach International Society in Switzerland and the Societé Internationale pour la Psychologie de l’Expréssion. The physician was also a Founding Member and President of the Sociedade Católica Internacional para os Estudos Médico-Psicológicos (Catholic Society for Medical-Psychological Studies) and a Corresponding Member of the American Psychiatric Association, the Academy of Medicine of Buenos Aires, and the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon.    

Finally, the acclaimed physician and academician was awarded the Order of Medical Merit as well as the Clementino Fraga, Oswaldo Cruz and State of Guanabara (now, State of Rio de Janeiro) medals of honor. 

Dr. José Leme Lopes passed away at the age of 86 on June 4, 1990.
