José Manoel Jansen was born on June 8, 1943, in São Luís in the State of Maranhão, to Domingos Luiz da Silva and Hedy Jansen da Silva.
He graduated in Medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in 1966 and later pursued a Master’s degree in Medicine, specializing in Pulmonology from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in 1977. In 1983, Jansen obtained a Ph.D. in Pneumology from the São Paulo State Paulista School of Medicine, followed by a residency at UERJ. He further holds specialization certificates in Pulmonology and in Respiratory Physiology from Université de Nancy I in France (1979), as well as a postgraduate degree in Internal Medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) (1968).
Among the numerous prestigious positions he has held throughout his career, Dr. Jansen served as a Full Professor at the aforementioned UERJ university and as an Associate Professor at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). He is also a faculty member at the Department of Pulmonology of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in addition to Professor in UFF Master’s program in Pulmonology and in the Master’s program at the Thoracic Diseases Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
Additionally, Dr. Jansen serves as Coordinator of both the Specialization Program in Pulmonology and the Pulmonology subject taught at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Also, the revered physician holds the title of Coordinator of Pedro Ernesto University Hospital’s Reference Center for Occupational Lung Diseases as well its Department of Pneumology, having served as Head of the General Medical Services unit for two terms.
The clinician currently holds the position of advisor to Brazil’s Ministry of Health and collaborator for the State Department of Health. Finally, he occupies the role of researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Center for Electronic Microscopy (CEME), in addition to Technical-Scientific Advisor to the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (FAPERJ).
When it comes to medical society memberships, Dr. Jansen holds a number of them, including the Rio de Janeiro Medical and Surgical Society; National Association of Resident Physicians (ANMR); Brazilian Association for Medical Education; Société Europeéne de Physiopathologie Respiratoire (European Respiratory Society – ERS); and both the Fluminense and the State of Rio Society of Phthisiology (Tuberculosis and Respiratory infections) and Pulmonology. He is also a Member of the Brazilian National Society of Physicians for the Environment and holds experience in medicine, particularly in the field of Pulmonology.
The lauded pulmonologist has been awarded several distinctions throughout his career, namely the Golden Lung prize for the best paper published in the Journal of Pulmonology in 1988; Order of Merit certificate conferred by the Cultura Médica scientific publishing house in 1990; Smith-Kline award in 1991 and 1993; Moysés Feldman medal in 1993; 1993 State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) certificate in recognition of his 25 years of dedication to higher education teaching; and the aforementioned institution’s Certificate of Merit for his 25 years of medical services rendered.
Upon running for a Full Member position at the Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine – ANM), Dr. José Manoel Jansen submitted an essay entitled “False Lung Tumors.”
