Marcelo Marcos Morales

Marcelo Marcos Morales was born on December 15, 1968, in the city of São Paulo in the State of São Paulo, to José Odir Morales and Ivani Santini Morales. He graduated in Medicine from the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1995. 

In 1998, he completed a Ph.D. from the Institute of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho (IBCCF), after successfully submitting and defending a final thesis titled “A Study on the Expression and Modulation of Transporters Along the Nephron: Physiological Implications.” In 2003, in turn, he went on to secure a postdoctoral degree from the John Hopkins University School of Medicine in the United States, whereas in 1998 he was admitted as an Adjunct Professor of Renal Physiology at the IBCCF, upon passing a public admissions exam.

Currently, Dr. Morales serves as the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) Head of Research and Scientific Training. Prior to that, he held the position of Head of Agricultural, Biological and Health Sciences at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), President of the Latin American Federation of Biophysical Societies (LAFeBS) and President of the Brazilian Biophysical Society (SBBf), in addition to its Secretary-General. 

Furthermore, he fulfilled the roles of Coordinator of the National Council for Control of Animal Experimentation (CONCEA-MCTIC), President of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Ethics Committee in the Use of Animals, and President of the International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) for a three-year term ranging from 2017 to 2020. 

The acknowledged physician also served as Coordinator of the American Biophysics Graduate Program (POSLATAM), which is affiliated with IUPAB, and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Physiology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Furthermore, he was appointed Secretary of the Brazilian Federation on Experimental Biology Societies (FeSBE) and Secretary of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC).

As an Associate Professor at UFRJ, Dr. Morales focuses his research on Biophysics, particularly in the fields of Cell Biophysics and Molecular Biology, therapies involving stem cells, nanotechnology, and gene therapy.

The doctor and scholar’s resume is filled with teaching activities conducted with the utmost excellence in undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs. In his remarkable career, he has overseen 28 Master’s final papers, thirty-two doctoral theses and supervised fourteen postdoctoral students. 

Moreover, Dr. Marcelo Marcos Morales has a prolific scientific output, as can be seen in the 166 scientific articles he has published in indexed international medical journals up to now, in addition to self-penned books and book chapters.
